Is what is becoming a widespread disintegration of the nuclear family the beginning of the end of civilised society?

Where are we going?

How do you see us in fifty years?

Will national wars and disagreements be replaced by domestic ones?

Is it worth getting married, especially when we seem to be signing divorce agreements before we,ve even wed?

When I was a kid only one kid at school had divorced parents. These days one kid at school has parents who aren,t divorced.

What has been the cause of this upheaval? The Hollywood glamorisation of divorce? Feminism? Economic hardship arising from the growth of capitalism? The rise of materialism, the consumer society, the media? Soap operas?

Is love now a capitalist commodity?

Lots of questions I know. I,m sure that Sir Rusty knight will have some thoughts on this subject, being a thinking man.

Do you believe in the concept of emotional capitalism?wine

Is love now a capitalist commodity? - wtf does that mean? Sorry, I don't get that.

Are you concerned about the apparent demise of the nuclear family because you are part of one, or because you wish you were? Is it really so much better than the freedom we enjoy these days? Would a down-trodden wife (or husband) from the 50s necessarily agree, do you think?

The world is changing rapidly, some of it for the better, some of it not so. Social change is just part of this, but we all have choices about how we live, more than ever before. The culmination is what we have now, made from the freedom we all crave and the resultant choices we make that were not possible 30 or 40 years ago. We pay for this freedom, of course, by new sets of rules and restraints imposed on us by the government of the day. Visiting rights and financial obligations for fathers are one example. As you rightly point out, they were hardly necessary not so long ago, but are something we are all aware of now.

Liberalism, and the ease of communication of it these days, is to blame. No-one likes to say that a 'good' and 'fair' idea is wrong so do-gooders make it easy to split families if one member appears to be treated less fairly than another. The fact is, that is what happens in life, life is not fair! The more we try to achieve this mythical equality for everyone the more problems are caused. Quite simply, it will not happen, we are all individuals. I will never be 'equal' to Steven Hawkin, because of his immense intelligence, just as he will never be equal to me in my ability to walk. OK, so that is an extreme comparison but it explains my point.

Perhaps the desire for some ideals of communism, rather than those of capitalism are to blame?

Elley,

WE are not going anywhere. I am living my life and you are living your life.

And the difference is:
From my point of view I know I am not perfect and looking forward to doing mistakes.
A person who brings 'universal' excuses tries to blame the world to justify doing nothing.

Do you have any data to support your argument? Were those old days not-divorced couples happier than nowadays divorced ones? Were those kids happier living with unhappy parents?

What is the ratio change of national to domestic wars in last, say, 500 years? And if it is to you favour isn't it because society have learned the hard way better to prevent or if need be to fight the war on paper? So much for a marital contract.

Off topic.
Guys, I have been told that it is difficult sometimes to understand/follow my English or how I put things in English. I really would love to hear questions, critique or whatever comes to your mind.
Anyway, discussion is by definition 'The act of discussing or exchanging reasons; examination by argument; debate; disputation; agitation.' Not when everyone agrees to the same thing.

Hugs to all hug

Elley .....

I guess things can never not change?

We used to all live in big houses, with all the family..... Then we downsized to small houses, the kids moved away, and the grandparents lived in Old Age Homes.... and all was well.

.... Now slowly, we seem to getting back to the Big Houses again, the kids never leave, and the grandparents get better treatment at home, than in modern institutions (if they still exist?)

So... the future is in our own hands, I think? The Days of Politicians dictating is drawing to a close because people are beginning to wake up to the quality of life?

In the old days I believe wives were too busy running the home, without gadgets, and trying to live within the budget/salary that the man brought home. People went without luxuries like 2nd cars, pools, exotic holidays, designer clothing, dining out weekly, etc.

Now... wives dont run the home anymore - they compete with men for available jobs, and materialism has become the New God. Why keep the same husband/wife/kids/dog when Everything is Disposable?

I believe that the main cause is the Media .... kids growing up viewing glamorous life-styles in La-La-Land and thinking that is the norm. Similar to watching blood and guts spewing out in the sitting room while eating dinner? (Imagine sitting around eating, in real life, while someone carves someone up on the lounge carpet?)

...Well thats just my old-fashioned viewpoint anyway.....
