Back in the eighty's, I made a pan of pot brownies with some really good cleaned weed. I cut three pieces about 1 1/2 inches square, shared with two friends of mine, stashed the rest of the 9x11 pan under the living room sofa, and went canoeing in New Hampshire for the day. We laughed continuously all day long, in roller coaster fashion, as we were having so much fun, in what was one of the best daytime experiences of my life. But that was the daytime.....

For the rest of this story, see my next entry......

That evening when I got home, I found a note on the kitchen table from my uncle, which said..."your grandmother isn't feeling well, the doctor was here, keep an eye on her". You see I lived with my grandmother at the time, and the news distressed me something terrible, as my grandmother was also my best friend, and added to it the effects of the brownies, suddenly what was a wonderful day, unexpectedly began to worsen. Add to it, the fact that, when I last saw her in the morning, she was doing fine, but that is the way of old age, you just never know when your health will suddenly turn.
I looked in on her, and she was sleeping soundly, so I turned my attention to getting the rest of my brownies cut up and frozen in individual 1 1/2 inch portions, as they last forever in the freezer. I went to the living room to retrieve the pan from beneath the sofa. When I reached underneath I could not feel the pan, so I got a flashlight to see what I was doing. When I looked under the sofa with the light, I found no pan. My heart stopped momentarily, and a wave of emotion made its way down my body, rushing from head to toe. Quickly heading back out to the kitchen, I paused and opened the garbage container in the kitchen to see if I had mistakenly threw the pan out, or if someone else had. No brownies.... I made my way into the pantry, and there I could see the side of the pan sitting just below the shelf, sandwiched tightly between the shelf and the top of the breadbox.... "Darn" I said, "that was stupid, I thought I put these under the sofa". Just as I was about to remove the pan, there was a knock at the back door. When I went to the door it was the next door neighbor checking to see how my grandmother was doing, "Fine" I said, "sleeping soundly". So she left, and I returned to the pantry to start cutting up the rest of the brownies. When I pulled the pan out from under the shelf, revealing the contents in the pan, my heart stopped again, this time alittle longer, and an even larger wave of emotion rushed down my body.....
Half of the pan was empty..... I held on to the side of the counter and grabbed my chest in awe of the sight...."Oh my God!!!" I said, feeling my knees buckling beneath me.
I went right into my grandmothers room and tried to wake her up, but she wouldn't wake up..... so I got more aggressive, and tried yet alittle harder, till finally she began to stir. When she opened her eyes they were as red as tomatoes, and she could barely move her mouth to speak any words..... "Grandma, what happened" I said, as I felt the first tears begin to roll down my face.... "I don't know" she said...."I was visiting with Rose".... "Rose!!" I said.... "Yes" she said, "we were having a good time, when everything just went black"...........
Now I don't know how many of you have ever experienced to opposite emotions at the same time, but its has only happened to me twice in my entire life.... that is, laughing and crying at the same time. Tears streaming down my face, I couldn't help but laugh hysterically at the story of her and her best friend eating all those brownies.......
As far as the rest of the night went, I kept my grandmother awake, and she gradually regained all of her senses by morning.... I never did breath a single word of what happened, to her nor anyone else, till long after she passed on about ten years later.... and as for Rose, I never did find out her story, I just know I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I saw her getting out of her car, one day, about two weeks after the incident.....the moral of the story....never assume you have taken all the precautions necessary to protect those around you, especially when it comes to something you shouldn't have or be doing in the first place....and oh, by the way...my second laughing and crying incident happened some years later, when I recieved a letter telling me my mortgage was paid off 12 years prior to its termination....but thats yet another story....cheers! wine
