I just got back from applying for health care thru the state of Tenneessee, I have severe back problems and am going blind because of cataracts, but . . . . because I am an American citizen and not homeless or indigent enough as far as they are concerned I do not qualify. I lost my job because of my back and sight, I do not have insurance of ANY kind, my brother pays my rent, my son pays my utilities & groceries and I don't qualify! ! ! What about all those years I worked and paid into the tax system???? I'm not old enough for social security, gotta wait 2 more years for qualify for early retirement & I think 5 more years for medicare.
While in the meantime illegal immigrants who do not pay into the tax system, and they benefit from it with free health care, welfare, etc. on MONEY I PAID INTO THE SYSTEM! ! ! !
So in other words I helped pay for them, but not myself?????
Somebody tell me, what's wrong with this picture???
This is a typical sentiment of the American people. Sick and tired of being driven lower and lower by the criminals. But don't bother complaining to idiots in other countries for the most part. They actually think we should be giving these crooks more!
Screw that, and screw them. If they think all of this is such a wonderful thing, send ships and planes to take them all to THEIR country.
I have also noticed how many problems other countries who are not fighting this are having with their influx. Not like we want that additional trouble here.
Maybe they are just jealous because WE ARE FIGHTING THIS, and may actually, some day, find a way to put a stop to it, instead of just constantly watching the decline in conditions, like they are.
It just shows how out of touch the people are that write the legislations and set the guidelines......It is no different in Aussie....but would like to know if they have a special conditions application.......
I guess my next step would be to see if I qualify for social security disability. I'm thinking of going to one of those social security lawyers first though, I have a couple of friends who went thru the process with s.s.d. & were turned down, then they went to a lawyer & then they got approved.

these are based on stats from 1998. dunno if things would be better or worse or much the same...
>The top 5 percent own more than half of all wealth... In 1998, they owned 59 percent of all wealth. Or to put it another way, the top 5 percent had more wealth than the remaining 95 percent of the population, collectively.
>The top 20 percent owns over 80 percent of all wealth. In 1998, it owned 83 percent of all wealth.
>The bottom 20 percent basically have zero wealth. They either have no assets, or their debt equals or exceeds their assets. The bottom 20 percent has typically accumulated no savings.
>A household in the middle — the median household — has wealth of about $62,000. $62,000 is not insignificant, but if you consider that the top 1 percent of households’ average wealth is $12.5 million, you can see what a difference there is in the distribution.
>The richest 10 percent of families own about 85 percent of all outstanding stocks. They own about 85 percent of all financial securities, 90 percent of all business assets. These financial assets and business equity are even more concentrated than total wealth.
>The average African-American family has about 60 percent of the income as the average white family. But the disparity of wealth is a lot greater. The average African-American family has only 18 percent of the wealth of the average white family.
>We are much more unequal than any other advanced industrial country.
>What is remarkable is that this was not always the case. Up until the early 1970s, the U.S. actually had lower wealth inequality than Great Britain, and even than a country like Sweden. But things have really turned around over the last 25 or 30 years. In fact, a lot of countries have experienced lessening wealth inequality over time. The U.S. is atypical in that inequality has risen so sharply over the last 25 or 30 years.
Scottishlass: I just got back from applying for health care....
If you have zero income and don't own your home or other substantial property with value, I don't know how they could say you're not indigent. They have to follow federal poverty guidelines. Zero income is definitely beneath the poverty guideline *unless* you have sufficient assets such as stocks, bonds, property, a car with substantial worth, etc...
If your net worth and/or income are above the federal poverty guidelines, then denial is fair and in compliance with the welfare reform acts. The whole point of denial to people with substantial worth is that if they can afford to own considerable property and material possessions, then they can afford medical care. (This is how our country is cutting down on people sitting around in a nice flat with expensive electronic toys living off the system.) If they have denied you assistance based on lack of indigency even though you can prove your net worth and income are both below federal poverty guidelines, you can ask for (DEMAND) a review hearing.
I'm not sure what kind of medical coverage the illegal immigrants in TN are receiving, but it's no walk in the park here in Ohio. Illegal immigrants here do not receive benefits from the department of health and human resources. They simply cannot because part of the process of receiving medical coverage is showing proof of citizenship. In fact, I'm quite suprised that when you went in and applied, they didn't ask you for a birth certificate and proof of address. Almost any reputable DHHR office in America has set guidelines about not only income qualifications, but also citizenship.
Here's the thing - IF the DHHR did NOT ask for proof of citizenship, then the American citizens could also walk in there, with no proof of anything, and get these same benefits that people claim the illegals are getting. I personally have not seen ANY government agency that is offering preferential medical coverage to illegal immigrants, but denying that same coverage to citizens who meet the same income guidelines. Even our free clinics in this area (which are reprehensible in the way of coming even close to adequate medical care), offer the same coverage to citizens as non-citizens. If there is a way to exploit the system and get free medical care here in America, believe me, the citizens would be doing it just as much, if not more than the illegal immigrants.
In my area at least, most illegal immigrants, by default, would meet the income guidelines. They are living 2-3 families in a 2 room outbuilding on a farm, doing crap labor 12 hours a day for $2/hr. They have absolutely no net worth because they own nothing. They own no home, no car, no decent clothing, no telephone, no computer, no TV, no iPod, and none of the other toys that citizens take for granted. I wouldn't trade my lifestyle with an illegal immigrant.
I understand that you are frustrated with the lack of medical coverage, and I agree with you that if you have become disabled/dependent and unable to work before retirement age, then by all means you should be entitled to the relief offered by the government. I would highly recommend that you go back and demand a review to see why you don't meet poverty guidelines if you have no income. Concentrate on your case and the reasons for your denial, because realistically, most of us have no clue what others are/are not getting and why/why not.
I also saw in your later post that you are considering applying for SSD/SSI. If you are disabled, I encourage you to follow through with this plan. In many states, qualification for SSD/SSI automatically qualifies you for certain medical coverage as well. In most states, it is automatically denied twice and then granted on the 3rd appeal. Good luck. I hope you get the medical coverage you need. NO human being should have to go without adequate health treatment.

Lass. Take the time to go through the SSD hoops. My ex hurt her back so bad at work that she became permanatety disabled she cannot walk nor stand for any real length of time and is headed for a wheelchair the rest of her life. After workmans comp, she applied and did receive SSD which (at least in PA) does provide medical coverage.
I would demand a hearing with the state though. Something just doesn't seem right with the situation. By requesting that your case be heard you are least making someone aware of the situation. Weather or not that really does any good is questionable, but the worse they can do is tell you what they already have and thats No.
I wish you the best of luck in each avenue you pursue. God Bless.

You have to apply first, get turned down, then get a lawyer for the appeal. Don't ask me, that's the way it works.
And illegals don't get free medical care, except for emergency care, where by law no one can be turned down. You want to sit in an ER and see if you can get your cataracts operated on, good luck.
If you renounce your US citizenship in favor of Mexico, you could go to Mexico, and then sneek back across the border and claim the rights you now complain about not having....

I don't personally see a problem with this. What people seem to keep forgetting is that America is a country in which the economic system is based on capitalism. I have no problem with guys like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and the Koch/Mars/Walton's owning the majority of the wealth. They did what needed to be done to get that piece of the pie. Granted, some of them probably had more resource and opportunity in the first place, but the majority of the men whose names dangle on the Forbes list, put in their fair share of work hours. I assure you that what they did NOT do, was sit around whining about how they were entitled to a government subsidy check.
Economics 101: This is what capitalism is all about. It's like the OPPOSITE of equal distribution of wealth. Free market, less government control, open competition, profit motive, private investment and control, etc... We shouldn't even expect any sort of equal distribution of wealth in a capitalistic country.
A really old man went into the local SS office to apply, the recaptionist ask for ID, he told her "don't have ID, she ask for ss card, don't have one, too old. birth certif.. don't have one.. too old finally he opens his shirt showing all of the gray hair on his chest..so..Finally she gave him SS. when he got home he told his wife this story.. she said " You should have droped youre pants and got total disability!"
