I got tired of the rat race... and escaped. Sometimes I think it would be better to go back to a simpler life. So many of our personal problems come from having to much time to think and analyze rather then having to survive.
I grew up on a family farm, we were about 70% self sufficient, raised our own chickens, cattle, pigs, vegetables, fruits, almonds, walnuts & kept bees. I learned to hunt at 12 years old, and have fished since I was a child. My dad was a custom cabinet maker and I learned a lot about wood craft from him. Sometimes I miss that lifestyle...

Hi JB, that sounds like a pretty idyllic way to grow up I would miss that too

Hi Trish! Wasn't sure if I wanted to post on this thread or not, the first instinct I had was gloom and doom, but the more I thought about it... I don't know that a change would necessarily be for the worst.
I didn't really appreciate that life as a kid... I always felt a bit jealous of the kids that lived in town, but looking back... the amount of freedom that I had! Packing a sack lunch and taking off on my horse for the entire day, lots of camping trips (may seem strange but camping is still my favorite holiday). At the time it just seemed like lots of work. I think I would appreciate it more now.

For some reason.. I just can't picture you sleeping on the floor of a tent

Thats how I see it too JB, it neednt be catastrophic at all but I think we do need to be looking at alternatives which would have a positive effect all round.
Doesnt sound at all strange - I love camping too, theres nothing in the world like sitting at the tent door in the morning with a mug of coffee and the sun starting to warm things through - I love it
It must have been so good to have a horse as a child - I would have loved that

You don't know me... during the 3 years I was backpacking I had a small tent and sleeping bag with me and spent about 1/3 of my time tenting it rather then staying in hostels. I'm a very happy girl on the floor of a tent!

You're right, we do. I feel the sun is our best energy source and one we can use without destroying the environment. If all new construction was required to have solar power built in, then solar systems would go into mass production, lowering the costs and allowing existing buildings to upgrade. Right now it's not practical for a lot of people because of the costs involved. But the gas and oil industry will prevent anything like that happening until they've wrung the last penny they can out of fossil fuels.
My favorite camping time is the night, with a nice fire and a glass of wine... just gazing at the millions of stars.
HJFinAZ: 5 years from now I may be dead, I will be satisfied waiting to see if I wake up tomorrow. I will worry about 5 years from now in 4 years 364 days..
Living in today makes things so less complicated...
-- I'm with you on this. Chaos is and always will be. Makes for an interesting life.

Just wait till you get old and senile like me. Then tell me about those tents and the hard ground...

I have this great honeycomb sleeping mat, rolls up to almost nothing but gives you great cush on the ground!
Don't get me wrong... I can enjoy the finer things in life, but I love the basics!
