welcome to the thread man

what are you parents like then ? what type of family are you from ? and what type of pressure did they put on you ? whats a bum in your country as far as you're family are concerned ?

a bum is a somebody thats does'nt do anything with their life ( THAT PLEASES THEM ) ! as far as my parents were concerned

do you come from a middle class family where everybody is successfull then ?

what made you decide to do a bachelor degree and then a masters then (personality i don't care what qualifications or money people have got or their status in life .....people i enjoy talking to its what i'm going for for the rest of my life ) !

have you thoughtof joining us on the ' tell us your life story thread '

A bum is not someone who doesn't have a education in Australia..............as far as family or anyone is concerned they love me with or without an education...................isnt that the way it is supposed to be?

trish123: Its all been a bit odd for me...........

My Dad didnt let me stay at school to take exams so I left there at 15 with no qualifications.

I had years at the university of live, earning several degrees before, at the age of 50, setting out to see what all this education stuff was about. I had always promised myself that by the time I was 50 I would explore education.

Im now 54 (urghhhhh) and counting down the last couple of months till the whole thing is finished with - it has been quite an exploration......... they want to hear the things they want to hear in those educational institutions, they dont want to hear what you have to say at all - well, thats at the BA level at least, I believe at MA level, theres more opportunity for personal input - I may get there, dunno.

Theres even a restriction on works you can quote in your essays, if a particular author isnt academically recognisedand you quote them in your essays, then you dont get the marks in recognition of your research - its like a rigorous scientific principle being applied at the ground floor level - but it is corrupt because they only accept their own words and principles............

The whole experiment has been a bit of a game for me really but I sit and watch my fellow students who are mainly quite a bit younger and I really wish them and their dreams all the best that life can offer but somehow, I cant help but feel that disillusionment may well be coming their way - at least for some of them.

Its a process, like building up team spirit before a game - education is just becoming a business like any other - they need bottoms on seats to pay their wages and they convince you that you need a degree to get on in life - which Im sure in many cases is perfectly true, a degree is respected in the workplace but to a large extent, this is a throwback from the class system where only the better off could afford to rise through the 'education machine'.

sxc666: I admire people who do , and can afford to get an education. However I admire more the strengh in people that choose not to persue an education for many reasons other than being a 'BUM' more.I would clarify a 'BUM' in a whole different meaning other than someone who does not have a education.

I just had to do it when I was 50 sxc, I had looked at it from the other side for all those years and just had an insatiable curiosity - I had yrs of doing things from the other side, smoking dope, bucking against the system in many other ways too - it hasnt been a case of being able to afford it either, we have a system which makes loans for students, I am now around £16,000.00 in debt because of it - believe me it has been at great cost - I just had to satisfy my curiosity - oh, yes, I wanted to explore the academic system of writing too..........

All through my 20's 30's and 40's I didnt need to do this and couldnt either cos of one thing or another but I did always have an insatiable desire for learning and wondered what it was about university that was supposed to be so good - well, Im almost out the other side now and think Im coming to the conclusion that its only so good cos they say it is - the whole thing needs a thourough overhaul............... wave hug

I have great parents and they all did for my education, did payment, provided with everything I needed, I just could not let them down, so education is very important in my country, mainly because to get a better job they need diploma, if possible with higher education, though quality of education is not very high, as great percentage of corruption exists in al levels of education, I myself spend 3 years of my life teaching at 2 universities, and left this job a month ago, as I could not stand such treatment to education, I am not such kind of person, who get his diploma for money and everything I achieved was done by my efforts.

As to the second question, yes, I am from Middle-class family.

Why I did study for bachelor's degree, cause I had a desire to study, why master's degree, mmm, cause with bachelor's degree I would not have a higher education, only half higher one...

Soz Gilly, I ate your cake............ badass me crying actually, it was the only piece that did get eaten, the rest sat in the fridge so long it got thrown away so please be happy that it too wasnt wasted laugh - or I could repost the same piccie grin

cut and paste till your hearts content Gilly darling - I have quite a busy day ahead though and may not be able to have much input - soz.

My story is that I was in the last bunch of kids who left school at 15 but I wanted to stay there and do exams - my Dad laughed when I suggested this on the grounds that I was a girl and was going to have babies very mad

He was a very, very strict parent and something of a trailsetter in that my Mum died when I was four and he kept all four of us children together at home with him and also worked a full time job in the foundry where he did his 8-5 normal job as well as their book keeping.

He himself had passed the 11 plus exams but was sadly disappointed to be unable to go to the grammar school because he was from a very poor Irish immigrant family and the couldnt afford the uniform and books for the school (what a waste of intelligent people that system was hey) so he muddled on through life as best he could but I cant help but think there was something of a chip on his shoulder. Even through what I see as his failings he was the best Dad in the world and is very sadly missed - oh, and he was 45 when I was born so thats a lot of years and massive social changes to be taken into account.

So, to sum it up - single parent in 1958 and 4 children to bring up, 3 of us girls, he had to be very strict or the church would have had us into childrens homes lickety splick (hope thats spelled right) and we were very poor - my sisters and i shared a bed, a doll and a teddy for most of our growing up yrs.

Very poor Gilly, especially by todays standards but I wouldnt change a day of it...................
