I read the EU forums regularly but I barely contribute because what I read sometimes alarms me.
I have never been the target but I cringe when I read the sentiments expressed and the manner in which its done sometimes (high handedness)
My ability to communicate fluently in the English language seems a major issue in this forum. And unfortunately any difference in opinion to the regulars (main contributors to the forum) is viewed as a racial bias.
I don't feel the same way about the international forums, I find them more accomodating. Many have the moral conscious to object to an exchange thats loosing focus and turning personal or derogatory.
With very very few exception, not many people in CS communicate professionally........... even those who come from English speaking countries - including the USA and UK.
This is deliberate......I don't think I should not be held to a higher standard.
Though I know for sure that my English is as good as, or better than those you claim to be the best !
I think the mods should take CS members through a short tutorial on survey design.......
That would avoid some ambiguity in the interpretation of the results.
We can't limit him to 3 (as someone proposed) because he has an upper cap of 217...............that poses a problem for those complaining.......and the mods wouldn't buy the petition
Surprised by the hullabaloo the whole thing created.
We give good names to things we like....................the kid probably liked the teddy so much and decided to name it using his favourite prophet’s name...................
Now imagine if this could have been allowed to become a global trend i.e. Kids naming their teddies Mohammed.......
In this context, i interpreted the saying as follows ......(not an expert on swahili though, you could be right)
If you have special endowments- you need not push it in people's faces. A big bust is visible with a blouse on! A beautiful figure and face are beautiful with clothes on.....we need not "over-advertise". People make conscious choices on how to sell themselves, unfortunately these choices make or break a profile.
The definition of under or over-advertisement will depend........some cultures dress scantily, others don't. But we have to remember that this is an international forum.
So anything "unusual" from a member's perspective will be discussed.......i,e we should always have the audience in mind. So we all have to understand that we come from different walks in life.
People will interpret how we look/what we say based on their reference point (background, culture, education etc). We have to be aware and accepting and not criticise them, since they too find us strange.
How we share our opinions is therefore equally important.
Luscious, there is a famous Swahili saying, I am sure you know it
"chema chajiuza, kibaya chajitembeza.............." (my very poor translation......"good things sell easily, the bad things need to be advertised)
I think some may have over-reacted to the thread
I think Mountain just wanted to share on how most would interpret the same picture. It can mislead.
Likewise, I would not take a guy seriously if he posed bare-chested – doesn’t matter how good he looks! I would interpret it as “that’s all he has”!
By sharing in the forums, hopefully others who are tempted to post similar photos, will reserve them for private sharing. Some photos attract or scare……it all depends……..
Its a fact of life, that we judge other by how they look, we cant deny it.
RE: What’s the most intellectual sounding book you have ever bought ??
Many......but "Animal Farm" always gets me thinking....
