I have heard that it is a insult to place money on the counter when you pay for something, I thought that was partly what the countertop was for. I leave money on the table when I tip at a resturant. When I go in to a bank they count the money and leave it on the counter to be picked up by the customer.
I went to a conveinence store earlier today and the woman who has owns it waited on me at the counter. I was going to place the five dollars on the countertop and I rememberd what I had heard, so I handed her the money, she put my change on the counter. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
What do you think? is it an insult to put the money on the counter when you pay?
I never thought of it as being an insult, actually. If the clerk has his/her hand out, I'll put the money there. Otherwise it goes on the counter, no insults intended.
Hi lass, have to say never thought about it. Here if the season is bad it is considered Good Luck if the customer throws the money on the floor , and the shop keeper will ask you to do it. Imagine doing that it other countries likely to get alot of abusive.

yes it is, last summer when i had a really bad day, the shop keeper next door came in and threw a small amount of money on the floor to bring me luck. Her kindness made me feel better if nothing else.
the prices being the way that they are, and the jobless rate being the way that it is (at least around here) I usually just throw the money at the cashier....

In the UK there is not hard and fast rule really, you will either have it handed to you or put on the counter. More often it will be placed in your hand....
In Italy, it is customary to NOT place change for a purchase into your hand. I am not sure why this is but the shopkeeper will more often than not have a little tray or dish on the counter purposely for putting the change in.
