Or is it that we now have 24 hour media coverage from all over the Globe, so that we now find out more than before?

Those Plates are in constant motion.
When they back into each other and suddenly lurch back into motion, then Watch Out.
Those Mega-Dams,besides creating a Micro-Climate in their Regions can definitely contribute to local Earth-Quakes,owing to the tremendous weight of water not being there before.A series of smaller Dams would probably be much more prudent, but not bolstering the EGO of the Politicians like a humongous single Dam would be.

Quite! That big dam built in Egypt, that is now all silted up, and the Nile no longer floods the floodplains that the farmers depended on ...... You`d realy realy think that some egg-head with a Degree somewhere would give some practical advice, huh?

Quite! In the little seaside tourist town I lived in, in SA, a river was channelled to divert it from the town. Whenever very heavy floods occurred this river would pop up and wash away the roads and the seaside restaurants.

I asked a Civil Engineer in the Water Dept howcome a qualified person could design such a faulty concept? His reply was "Well, you see, what we study is how to make it last for 5 years, and then we move on - so future problems is for the next person to figure out".

Now, I hear that here in CH, a Qualified person whose work does not outlive the specified time (differs for each trade, ie 7yrs for a plumbing job, +- 20yrs for a building job) gets stripped of their qualification, and has to do their trade all over again. Now That makes sense, to me!

Some serious Screw-Ups happened.
Brig was partially devastated some years back, some Quarters of Berne were flooded by the Aare earlier this year.
Mostly because of meddling with the proper flow of the water, and building where no one in their Right Mind ought to builddunno wow wave
