Well, I don't know how it's done in your neck of the woods but here a bottle of wine is taken to dinner, yes. It's not mandatory, its a gesture, but it would be frowned upon if one didn't make a contribution.
That's not the same as going to dinner and taking your own food!! I've never heard of such a thing.
When my guests come, they are spoiled, they have great food and wine, and they get waited on. Wouldn't have it any other way.....
Just different customs I guess?
