A good friend of mine is having a 'get together' this evening...she's invited many of our mutual friends, plus several I don't know....MMmmmm...thinking about going if this stupid headache goes away....
roseofsharon: Well, I don't know how it's done in your neck of the woods but here a bottle of wine is taken to dinner, yes. It's not mandatory, its a gesture, but it would be frowned upon if one didn't make a contribution.
That's not the same as going to dinner and taking your own food!! I've never heard of such a thing.
When my guests come, they are spoiled, they have great food and wine, and they get waited on. Wouldn't have it any other way.....

Potlucks....we do them at work.... and for big family get togethers. Everyone brings something they cooked/baked or the buns and salads and deserts.
It's lots of fun, and you get to taste things you might not have tried before. It can be very interesting when you have different cultures bringing in their own ethnic dishes.
I love the pot luck suppers because they are not fussy, are casual and the person hosting the get together, is not stuck with all the preparation and costs. It's expensive to put on a supper for a few people and supply booze etc.
The group can relax and enjoy each other's company, and the host is not stuck cooking the whole time. (JMO)

epicure: how do u decide the host? people do it in turn?
It depends on the context ... if the potluck is being thrown by an individual for a group of family/friends or by an organization or club or church. Usually, the host will provide some basic dish, such as the meat dish and/or the alcohol (or both ... neither of which is cheap), and everybody else brings side dishes. Sometimes the potluck is themed.
Potlucks are wonderful ways for everyone to contribute and sample new dishes. Recipes are often shared around. It's a mostly casual kind of thing that goes well with American BBQs on football Sundays, holiday/birthday celebrations, or whatever.
This potluck is being hosted by a cultural heritage group, which is really interesting to me. Everyone is supposed to bring a side dish, and the meat is taken care of (not that I'll be having any). I'm baking up some homemade dinner bread with fresh basil and olive oil. My bread usually goes over well.

When we do the family get togethers, we rent the Irish hall. One aunt alone has 13 grandchildren and the other has 14.... not including all the spouses, and who brings a date, and what friends come with their children. It's quite the gathering.
JMO, some friends have just said lets do a pot luck at my house, or they arrange between themselves where it will take place. It depends on the group.
Family reunions with my former in-laws.... they made a decision to have one once a year, and decided amongst themselves who would have it one year and then the other's said what year they would host it.
So... the first re union hosted was at my home, the day after the big tornadoes hit Edmonton. Lots of fun with a new baby, 2 other small children, and trying to find out if your family in Edmonton survived and were alright. It's also lots of fun when you try to understand their language. 2 of them brought their own bottles of booze, but for some odd reason they were too busy to bring stuff for the pot luck.
A potluck is where everybody brings something to share and everyone sets down to enjoy other dishes that people bring...Its not bad if you know the other people. I always think of how clean a person is.and if they wash there hands after....you know what I mean....

If possible, avoid having them there, and if worst comes to worse... don't touch the food they brought. (food allergies serve me well in these situations)
Yeah, My daughter and I will probably be crossing an ocean or climbing a mountain (all while helping save stranded animals) With DORA, there's alot of traveling involved so I probably won't get back til' late...
