A week ago, I cam back from guiding a tour around Spain and would like to present you the amazing energy and beauty of Toledo, former capital of Spain until in 1561 Madrid took over such "honor". You can see on my page a pic of the guardian towers of the ancient wall around the city through which you could enter, called now "La Bisagra".
Toledo was one of the most famous trade centers in spanish medieval history, shared home of christians, jews and muslims. The 1st historical document of the city was written by Tito Livio, roman conqueror more than 2000 years back. The most famous swords of european kings were forged in that city and its jewlery...gold incrusted on black iron with the most delicated designs of flowers, birds or muslim patterns are unique in Spain. The cathedreal is of such artistic beauty as I had never seen any before, unique in many ways as well, but what I liked best is that all ancient buildings are so very well conserved that you can imagine how life was hundreds of years back, coppel stone, narrow, winding roads up and down and the deep river flowing around this ancient city of Toledo. All newer buildings have to be in tone with the ancient ones or are not allowed to be build.
Dates : 40 minutes drive from Madrid
actualy around 60.000 inhabitants
529 meters above sea level
