First new thread for me so bear with me please. As some of you know I recently went to Crete on vacation. Can't get the place out of my mind and am seriously thinking of buying a place there and eventually relocating. Who else out here has relocated to a different country/culture and what kinds of problems did you encounter?

I went abroud for a year to Ecuador. I was really lucky because I lived w/ a family and they helped me out with the little stuff.
1. always know what not to say. If you make silly mistake, then the locals may blow it off (like mispronouncing a word, slang or otherwise).
2. become super familar w/ you surroundings, and mode of popluar transpotation.
3. Know how much taxis cost from point a to point b.
4. don't frequent tourist spots, greater chance of being robbed, especially if they realize you are new.
5. And the big one IF IT MAKES THE LOCALS ILL, STIR CLEAR OF IT. you will most certianly get sick.
can't think of anything else. Does that help at all?

Lol!! Yeah, to a point. I guess what I'm really interested in is more how much you enjoyed being in a different country. Understand the language thing and am working on that. More things like health care, taxes, ect.. How about S.S.? Problem collecting overseas? Greek law says only 90 days for non EU citizens. Is there a way around that?

Don't know about Europe, do know there was no S.S. in Ecuador, just charity.
And as far as I know, most other countries have govt. provided medical care, at least they do in France and England, and even Cuba.
Did I enjoy the country? I loved it. It's crazy, but every now and then I get "homesick" for Quito and the food. Even the dancing, cafes and stores were so much different and lovely in the own way.
I have thought of moving down there, but the economy is completely different, and I have family in the states.
I say move, especially if that is what your gut is telling you.

Tell you what. Crete was probably the most beautiful place I have ever been. Everything about it just calls out to you - the people, the culture, everything. Just can't get it out of my mind! Looking into the possiblity of buying a place there with a friend of mine from England. He's gung ho too so it might just take off. So many things to look at though it gets daunting at times. Not enough to make me give up the dream tho! Lol!!
cardsfan24: Never but wanna relocate to somewhere hot, with nekkid wmn...oooh and barbecue chicken..yeah and macn cheese...oh man im sor hungry stinkin ravoli...
Do they serve mac-n-cheese in Brazil? Maybe you get a life time supply of mnc and move to Brazil, BINGO : warm weather, hot women and mac-n-crack. ta da

One of my Profs loved Greece and Crete beyond worlds. He'd always bring slides that were just beautiful. Of course he taught the classics, so it was all slides of the ruins and such, but the vistas were amazing.
I am happy for you. Plow through the work and in the end it will be worth ever second of it.

I have done it twice, i think the biggest problem i found is if
you don't understand the language and English is not that widely spoken particularly if you are intending
to start a business. Also your attitude of mind you have to except the culture, attitudes and values may be
different and go with it, if you are unable to except that it will drive you mad

Thanks for the input! Got a small start on learning Greek and figure to do a lot more if this happens. As far as starting a business, I'm a carpenter by trade so can work most anywhere. Lucky that way. Love the people and the culture so thats a big plus as far as I'm concerned. The people are fantastic!!
