The meat is sold under so many different names, we feel like just throwing it all out now. It is hard to know what to do about the meat that is in the freezer which has been there for a couple of months.
More than 220 meat products have been recalled by Maple Leaf or companies that used recalled meat, including Tuesday's announcement of three additional brands of ready-made sandwiches sold in the Maritimes and Ontario.
Two distributors, Atlantic Prepared Foods Ltd. and Metro Ontario Inc., said they were voluntarily recalling sandwiches that may contain some of the 220 recalled meat products.
Atlantic recalled Irving, Sub Delicious and Needs brand sandwiches, sold throughout New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. Metro Ontario removed three sandwiches under its Fresh 2 Go brand from selected A & P and Dominion locations across the province.
Maple Leaf initiated its recall after the Listeria bacterium was detected in some of the goods produced in one of its Toronto plants, but eventually ordered the recall of all products made at the facility as the outbreak escalated
THE VULNERABLE: People with weak immune systems, the elderly, pregnant women. Although the infection may be mild in a pregnant woman, there could be a miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth or potentially fatal infection in the baby after birth.
THE VICTIMS: Six deaths, all of them in Ontario, have been directly linked to the outbreak, while the deaths of another nine people with listeriosis are under investigation to determine if the outbreak was to blame.
THE CASES: Some 29 cases have been conclusively linked to the outbreak, including the six confirmed deaths and the nine deaths under investigation. Twenty-two of the cases are in Ontario, with four in B.C., two in Quebec and one in Saskatchewan. An additional 30 cases remain under investigation - 16 in Ontario, 10 in Quebec and four in Alberta.

The problem is that it takes weeks to months for the bacteria to show up as symptoms.
It can take up to 7o days for Listeria to develop fully and in the majority of cases, can be successfully treated with antibiotics. So, If you do not have a compromised immune system and if you have not abused antibiotics to the point that you are immune to them, if you do develop Listeria, odds are in your favour. As well, it is PROCESSED meats and food products that are in question here - not all types of meats. Let's not make this more than it is - simply refrain from buying, and using processed meats and foods. Cook a roast or a ham, slice it and use that for sandwiches....make your own sauce and other stuff. JMO, but we all would be healthier if we ate a whole lot less of processed foods to begin with, regardless of scares like this. People were not sick like they are now, nor did children have the "behaviour" problems and allergies that are so predominant now, when we relied far less on the easier and expensive processed foods.
