I'm not too sure about that, according to this it appears to be somewhat split based on what type is being used:

Citing:

Insomnia is often seen with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), with all tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) except amitriptyline, and all selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) with venlafaxine and moclobemide as well. Sedation has been reported with all TCAs except desipramine, with mirtazapine and nefazodone, the TCA-related maprotiline, trazodone and mianserin, and with all MAOIs. REM sleep suppression has been observed with all TCAs except trimipramine, but especially clomipramine, with all MAOIs and SSRIs and with venlafaxine, trazodone and bupropion.

THX Deborah.
During my (journalistic) investigations of the matter I discovered that some doctors are handing them out like candy. Also I cam across more than a few cases of suicide.
Take care

venaflaxine, prozac, cipramil the most commonly used anti depressants here are not sedative. Amitripline is used here a lot and that does help with sleep and for pain relief

Zoloft is well tolerated and effective for the treatment of depression and certain types of anxiety disorders.

Zoloft is FDA approved to treat depression, social anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in adults over age 18. It is also approved for OCD in children and adolescents age 6-17 years.

Zoloft is the #1 doctor-prescribed brand of its kind. Zoloft has treated more people than any other brands of its kind for 14 years. And Zoloft is available in multiple strengths, so your doctor can decide a dose for you.
