I´ve experienced some in my own country. In the South, you wait for people to invite them to their place, and when/if they do, you should consider it a privilege and be very polite, keep your hands to yourself and not ask questions. In the Northeast, people will be surprised and offended if you don´t stop by their places for a visit, during lunchtime and without previous warning, and will get mad if you don´t help yourself to the food and the fridge.

Anyone got any tips on how to avoid sorry gaffes, offenses and misunderstandings, due to cultural differences?

that sounds about the same as America!! But switch the north and south. Southern people here are generally friendlier. Operative word, is "generally". We refer to it as southern hospitality. I believe that northern people here are less friendly. A perfect example is....I was raised in the north, and I am the most unfriendly person in Americathumbs up

Just explain yourself to them and tell them you are not used to this kind of way

That's what it's like, where i'm from (Kenya). I think it's polite to call first, yes it happens there, but it really isn't a big deal when someone drops by unannounced. Here, the finns i know, mostly invite you 'out' for a drink. It hardly ever happens at their houses. One of my best friends was finnish, i eventually cut her off, because the kind of friendship we had, was not what i have grown to think it should be....

Thank God, i have sisters here, i'd probably have already packed up and left.

thumbs up

That´s good! But suppose you don´t KNOW you´re offending people because you don´t know how you´re supposed to behave in the first place?

I went to live in the Northeast and thought I was being very polite (being from the South). It tool me over a year to realize they though I was stuck-up and could explain myself, apologize and change my behavior.

You think it really wasn´t friendship? Or in your eyes friendship was something else, while SHE thought she was really being your best friend?

See, I never know. Here in Brazil if I kiss and hug someone I´ve just met, just because I liked them, they won´t think I´m being too "forward", it´s a natural thing to do.

If I hug and kiss someone from another country, I never know how they´ll take it and what they´ll think I´m actually doing.

dunno confused beer

You shouldn't have to change who you are.. I have lived all over the United States, my fathere was in the military, so I learned to adapt very quickly.. but I was still me, just be yourself, you will either be accepted, or you won't..

I have lived in canada all my 44 years

and there is some differences here in the states..

I find here very friendly and speak to you even
if they dont even know you...

In Canada/or where i lived..you usually dont
say anything unless you are asked..

I mean i just dont go up and talk to someone i
dont know..

But here in North Carolina..we stopped at a store...
and this stranger/man came right up and started
to talk to me..

Not saying i dont like friendly people..

but i just really dont like someone just coming up
out of the blue and start talking..especially a manroll eyes

I think most people understand that those from different areas/backgrounds/cultures may not have the same beliefs and so are usually will to make allowances and not expect them to conform to their particular stance.

As an example

I used to be a Computer engineer working at private houses, On one occasion I attended a customer's home in North London and found they were nudists, They asked if I wanted to remove my cloths, I replied no and would feel uncomfortable doing so, they were fine with that, and carried on as they were while I fixed the PC, When all was sorted and was chatting and finishing my coffee, I realised that I had become oblivious to their nudity. I had adapted to their culture.

It opened a new chapter in my life

very happy
