My daughter in law is 5 months pregnant, she went for a scan and was told the baby's heart is to big. She is being sent to a London hospital for another scan next week. Although she is being told not not worry obviously we are, does anyone know anything about this condition and it's possible implications.

morgan5: thank you

Very welcome. I was thinking about adult high blood pressure and had some thoughts. Obviously adults take medication and follow a special diet to manage their blood pressure and the fetus can receive this medication, or a derivative specifically developed for the young through administration to the mother. But how, or will they, attempt to control the diet of the child?

Sorry, I am not trying to cause undue stress. I just thought that you might be thinking about it to.

Have a wonderful evening

hug

The question becomes, "why is it so big".

It is it because of a defect and a build up of fluid, most typically caused by a ventricular deformity? In most cases, these issues resolve themselves as the child ages, but it is appropriate treatment to measure and scan the heart to determine why it is the way it is.

I will say that an enlarged heart is not all that uncommon.

that is correct, and if there is a significant abnormality detected that could result in permanent physical harm or death, many doctors are able to operate on the baby's heart in vitro, but it is very rare that this would occur.
