as i was cooking the boy's supper i pondered the following.

i'm entitled to an irish passport on the grounds that my maternal grandmother was born here. this is ironic since the reason my grandmother was born here is that her father was a member of the occupying british army. (a further irony is that my lifelong support of the right of the pira to wage war against the british state probably makes this state less rather than more inclined to hand over one of their passports.)

so, should there be a rider on the grandmother clause to filter out descendants of imperialism or does the celtic tiger and net immigration to ireland mean the grandmother clause should simply be scrapped ?

Excuse me now a second...scold

My family can be traced directly all the way back to Niall Noigíallach - Niall of the Nine Hostages - who was High King of Ireland in the 4th century.

Even at this, there was a few centuries where the McNeill clan lived in Scotland, and my great-grandfather was Scottish, so technically I'm only 7/8 Irish!

In short, yes, to some of us, it definitely does matter.

There's a story in that! Yes you should be entitled to a passport here, and the Government cannot judge you on your political leanings.

As for Lostys statement, I am speechless, Is he reading off the same page?confused

Not much point taking offence with the pira is there? that is now firmly in the past and long may it stay there.

If we get offended with out historical past, how are we going to deal with the problems in our present?

i think, like others, he just read the word pira and flipped though you'd think with the word ironic appearing twice he'd have realized it wasn't quite so simple. bit naughty to put it in but i wanted to get some reaction...

i don't want the passport but the clause is abused. my cousin got one purely as a tax dodge.

presumably it was introduced as an incentive to new citizens when emigration was draining the country's talent but it seems overly generous now especially for someone like me who has no genuine irish connection at all other than choosing to live here.

(might be posting this twice, having a lot of internet problems)

for me- it was always in the past, but when people bring it up as a 'present' and 'future' ie lifelong, then i feel they don't really see it as in the past. as for the passport- if you don't think you should have it, then don't apply for it- simple as that

Imagine!

I don't know how long you have lived here but as one who has, I certainly do not wish to debate the politics we lived through in the decades before this one.

I will quite happily debate current politics and only use the past as a historical reference.
