I think it depends on the law. We all know right from wrong. If you steal or cheat or cause harm to someone, you know it is probably not only morally wrong but against the law.
If you are J walking ... well... we know but hey .. what the hell?
Depends what your doing.... and maybe what the intent of your actions are....
how great it would be if ones true intent could be determined, then used as a basis for the severity of the punishment. instead of the 3 strikes and your out rule of thumb.
I don't know if your talking from personal experiences but I can say that I have never gotten in trouble with the law for anything. I know enough to stay out of or away from things that might be shady.
Are we talking traffic law? In that case, I would get in trouble every day for speeding.... or maybe taking my chances on the yellow light but that is about as serious as it gets.
fireliter: Should there be a law against stupidity?
Even attorneys spend hours researching the law before presenting their case.
laws have become so convoluted, yet still as a citizen we are held accountable for failure to know the law.
yet in the ways of economics and investments we are told theres no law against stupidity.
any thoughts on this
Excellent questions. Ignorance of the law a valid excuse? No Law against stupidity? Seriously? Economics and investments? Throw those dumb**** in jail.

thats a controversial subject indeed, even for law professionals. but one needs to know that there is a dinstinction between criminal law and civil law and there is a difference between them when it comes to the need to know the law (and therefore the concequences of your actions) to be convivted. And i am saying this apart from very obvious cases where x killed y or z harmed w with intend. In criminal law, one needs to establish that the defendant knew the law and still went against it. and you are not obliged to know the law, hence, stupidity is a very valid excuse in most cases...
they like it that way, there are loopholes for everything, anything anyone can do, can be found guilty or innocent, because of how they make th laws... They get to do what they want, doesn't matter about what the laws are they make them up as they go along.... I know
The problem is that the law has become holy in this country. A lot of people really think that the Constitution was written by Moses, not by a bunch of guys in wigs and tights who didn't want to pay taxes.
If I jaywalk, why should it be illegal? For that matter, why should it be illegal if I want to say the F-word when I'm talking on my ham radio? I ain't hurtin' nuthin.
It doesn't take the law to know when you do something wrong....you don't have to know the intracasies of the law to know you're breaking it...besides laws are there to protect...it's people like criminals who want to circumvent them...that only ever find out just how wrathful the law can be...Yes stupidity should be an offense.....

seat belt laws are made to protect adults from themselves...
No... alot of laws are made just because they know they can tax and fine people. any normal person can look both ways before crossing the street, yet you can be fine for it. by not following the governments rules, for controlling your life... some laws are for protection, many are not.
Tater: seat belt laws are made to protect kids and made to protect adults from themselves... but city buses and school buses don't have them. if seatbelts are the law and they care about people safety, why????? It is because it will take money away from the state. they want to take our money, the safety issue is only a front...

If you think about it though...it still boils down to safety...that's why they made cross-walks...as a safety zone for pedestrians...yes a normal person can look both ways...but a driver not expecting you to cross that may not see you...can also just might mow you down not to mention cause an accident while trying to miss you...You have to see the big picture behind why laws are there and certain laws exist....I'm sure that is the reason crosswalks were invented in the first place...otherwise they wouldn't bother to go to the expense....don't forget for every law implemented...it also costs the government....so laws are not brought in frivolously...at least criminal and traffic laws...when you get down to taxation laws...well then yeah...I can agree...those were brought in solely to make sure they collect money off the backs of the people....

I just don't like the government imposing on my decision making process. The government is ANTI-COMMON SENSE. They don't want people to be able to think for themselves, why do you think schools allow calculators in class, they don't want people to think just memorize what order to do things... to get anwsers.. They are dumbing down our kids....
.....it really depends upon the "type" of law involved.....in contract law, "mutual mistake" is an affirmative defense to contract formation, while in tort law, mistake is no defense, & constitutes "negligence per se".....so there no bright line answer to this, & is factually & circumstantially dependant....
