Plans to continue pullout of Iraq despite advice of senior military commanders.
In response to: June 2008: Obama: "I've also consistently said that I will consult with military commanders on the ground and that we will always be open to the possibility of tactical adjustments."
In response to: WASHINGTON - United States Central Command chief General David Petraeus, supported by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, tried to convince President Barack Obama that he had to back down from his campaign pledge to withdraw all US combat troops from Iraq within 18 months. This was at an Oval Office meeting on January 21.
But Obama informed Gates, Petraeus and Joint Chiefs chairman Admiral Mike Mullen that he wasn't convinced and that he wanted Gates and the military leaders to come back quickly with a detailed 16-month plan, according to two sources who have talked with participants in the meeting.
Obama's decision to override Petraeus's recommendation has not ended the conflict between the president and senior military officers over troop withdrawal, however.
Keane, the army vice chief of staff from 1999 to 2003, has ties to a network of active and retired four-star army generals, and since Obama's January 21 order on the 16-month withdrawal plan, some of the retired four-star generals in that network have begun discussing a campaign to blame Obama's troop withdrawal from Iraq for the ultimate collapse of the political "stability" that they expect to follow US withdrawal, according to a military source familiar with the network's plans.
Hope and Change. I admire his conviction and willingness to push forward but sure hope for Iraqis sake he knows what he's doing.
Unfortunately he inherited this war. Starting it was absurd..continuing it would be asinine. There will never be political stability in the Middle East. We "infiltrated" Iraq on the premise of w.m.d. Nothing was found. President Obama was correct in pointing out that by concentrating on Afghanistan and Iraq, it only serves the terrorists to grow in other countries. This is my opinion. Nothing anyone could ever say would make me change my mind about this senseless war. God Bless the Troops.

because of the right wing a!! rippers that are about to come.
God Bless the Troops didn't mean to put after that line.

Actually he inherited a UN mandated occupation years after a war has occurred. At relative peace at the moment compared to what it once was he risks losing an expensive and hard won victory.
As I said, I hope that for Iraq's sake he knows what he is doing.
Gypsy All the reasons for the war were accomplished which included ....
- to get Iraq to comply with ceasefire terms - to stop Iraq’s Inadvertence to UNSC resolutions - to force Iraq to cease it’s violation of human rights - to stop Iraq’s material breaches of UNSC resolutions - to end Iraq’s WMD capability and aspirations - to end repression of Iraq’s civilian population - to force Iraq to return or cooperate in accounting for Kuwaiti and third country nationals - to force Iraq to return Kuwaiti property wrongfully seized by Iraq, - to end Iraqi Support for terrorism - to show America has the will to help allies and destroy foes - to depose a regional threat take in Saddam that would have to be dealt with sooner or later - to force action from SA to take care of it's radicals - to pressure other regimes in the area not to provide passive or active support to Jihadists - to position US troops in the region in force to enable that pressure - to aid their global and NATO mission by placing a Strategic Air Support base - to support and help create an Arab democracy as an example to others

So, what part of it was a defeat?
All of it. When you "force" a country to do something-inevitably it will revert back to what it was before. Are you suggesting that we occupy the middle east for good? That's insane in my opinion. We went there for wmd--that was the excuse. The rich got richer off of the war, the poor got poorer-or worse, lost their children. Do you realize that they sent reservists over there? People who would be called on in an emergency to protect OUR country if need be. Not trained as soldiers per say--not like what they encountered in Iraq. IF they come home, they are not treated as soldiers but as reservists, not the same benefits, even though they did the same job. What is fair? Where is the victory? The rich got what they wanted and it is proven by our economy right now. Ever hear of Halliburton?
Answer one question for me---if they are in such democratic control, why were they burning President Obama's pictures and our flag???

As far as I'm aware the UN never mandated an occupation.....
The US and its 'allies' went against the UN in invading...
I am not sure if you are aware but at the moment there are Elections being held in Iraq....the universal forces are not having an easy time off...most of them are just desperate to come home...
With these elections of course there is going to be a back lash against any US president....

They started burning President Obama's picture before he became president. They haven't stopped burning our flag. There is no "control". Of course, when we leave, I'm quite sure we will be blamed for the "backlash" ... I'm also certain that not much will be mentioned on the billions of dollars spent over there to help rebuild them-coming from the US. The whole thing was an idiotic, greed driven venture. It needs to be stopped.
While you may think that in these dust-ups the "bombees" may suffer some inconveniences, the exercises do provide a more entertaining evening news show for those of us in the USofA. Still, there is another rather important third feature of these modern "police actions" – a lot of money can be made. But to reap these large financial rewards, a close relationship between the defense contractor and the politicians (what Eisenhower called the "military/industrial complex") is required. Typically, modern wars are followed by occupation and the repairing of the damage from the "contingency" (military/government code word for military intervention, usually not an emergency). Companies like Brown & Root Inc. (B&R) are hired to go in and build and/or repair bases, bridges, utilities, roads, airports, etc. Now in a rational world, you would think that the country that just got whupped would be the one to pay for all this. Not so, the good old American Taxpayer voluntarily (income tax is voluntary, didn't you know) contributes the funds to pay these contractors.
vinny1967: I'm great this mornin..........Looking forward to the weekend.

So whats the excuse for ignoring Zimbabe, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Chechnya, Tibet, Pakistan and Tasmania Where most, if not all of the above happen to occur almost daily. Or do these countries not warrant a knee jerk reaction to a right wing populace howling for blood?
