Oh I saw it the other day.... isn't it wonderful?! As much fun as when they started the abbreviated Orient Express back up. I've seen that (OE) at the train station here on the way to Venice cheering and hollered at them asking if they're enjoying themselves grin? They seem to give a thumbs up.

I love trains and remember tootling around the uk and the rest of Europe as a kid, even was in a sleeper Paris to Milan with a group of funny nuns... had a blast. But I do like the old time ones best, when we would stick our heads out the window and wave at passers by in the summer!

Excuse my ignorance, but what makes the steam?

The only steam train I been on was when I was a kid and we went on holidays .... left Johannesburg on an electric train, and overnight sometime it swopped over to a Steam Engine heading for the sea - Lovely, the next day, going thru tunnels us kids stuck our heads out the windows to get our faces turned black with soot...... And the chook-a-chook-a-chooka was an exciting sound ...... to kids.

Is this some new type of steam driven train?... no coal?

it produces less damage to the environment than a diesel train due to the design of the and adances of modern fuel yes it uses coal but it burns it in a most efficient manner its taken 18 years to build and its glorious

Probably uses Microdust-Filters in the Exhaust like the Road-Diesels.dunno
Saw the Old Orient Express at the beginning of the Sixties, the leg that went through Zurich, and once the one in Venice.
Interesting, that Europe doesn't have that intense Love-Affair with Trains like the USA.laugh

Well it's nice not to have to do all the driving for a change as we've been driving and poluting for years, just as you're learning to do tongue.

I must say, here in Switzerland the exhaust fumes things are well controlled. I judge it by when I go jogging. In SA(or Italy where I tried) one could not jog on a road where cars travelled - you`d get asphyxiated! The next day you had burning lungs from car fumes.

But here in CH - this does not happen - there are no fumes that I can detect with my nostrils, or my lungs.

There is a little narrow gauge train that runs here sometimes, for tourists I think? We see this little trail of smoke moving along and then you hear the whistle. So unfamiliar, its like hearing a dog barking, or a rooster crowing!grin

Smoky you're going to hate me probably for saying this but how can you jog or be concerned about damage to your lungs through smoke pollution and at the same time smoke cigarettes? Your lungs are definitely in a shocking state and you might as well jog in traffic! They won't notice the difference.
Sorry for that but I couldn't help it.

Sorry for that but I couldn't help it.[/quotejOh hi Darl, nein, I do not hate you for your words of pure ignorance. You will have to search the threads and you will find the reason for the purity of my healthy lungs ........I`ve repeated myself enough on the subject of me and smoking.

If my lungs are in such shocking condition, then howcome, at the age of 6l, I can still jog for miles? Dance for hours? ... Ahhh, because my lungs still get excercise .... Most smokers are passive people, sitting and smoking ready-made cigarettes. If I smoked what other people smoked there is NO way I could even walk! There is sugar in store-bought ready rolled cigs and combined with the tar it coats the lungs in a shellac layer!

Hey, I train 18yr olds to run!

It's an incontrovertible medical fact that your lungs are coated in a thick dark brownish gooey substance. You can see what your lungs look like if you go to Google images and search for smokers' lungs.
