Beneath the pine fronds of green The solstice circle lay still and serene The Yule log of oak Alive with fire and smoke Cut at dawn on this midwinter eve With libation of bread and of mead. Its fragments kept ‘til twelfth night Were scattered about at first light In the ancient forest of trees Ashes offered in the chill breeze. I was ready to pack A long winter’s nap As the clock struck twelve on the wall I heard the knock on the front door fall Upon opening the door I froze in disbelief for In a suite of red there stood a stout man With rosy cheeks, white beard to land On me; twinkling eyes and a melting smile “We need to talk, can I come in awhile? The holiday spirit is the reason For this and every season” And before I could ask why How in the world did he fly? I was covered in gold glitter Changing its color to silver. It smelled of pine and chestnuts Like a crisp wind and grandma’s hugs Fuzzy new mittens and mistle toe Smiling faces from years ago
Twinkle lights softly aglow
I realize that Santa Clause With peppermint and rum balls Had brought back to life In my heart this night The essence of giving To me memories of living In the magickal world of love Kissed with frosty shapes of Sugar and gingerbread Softly he then said “Don’t forget the cookies and cocoa” With large snowflakes dancing to and fro Sleigh and reindeer put on quite a show Pawing at the moon kissed new fallen snow His message to bestow as up went the sleigh “Blessed be, Merry Yule and Happy Holidays!”
D.B. thank you for such a wonderful retelling, in a new way, of a great old time! even though my nose is not that acute, i can smell all of your wonderful words. ;-)
