Falling In

I wish I could play it cool
Blasé, unaffected, unperturbed
Pretend this precious thing
This wonderful, beautiful
completely intoxicating
love
has not made a fool of me

After all, it is hardly flattering
For a man of my age to fall
Head first into the deep end
Fins and tail flailing
as if suddenly seeing
the blue ocean vast
for the first time

I’m hooked; hook, line and sinker
happy as a mixed metaphor lark
Turning away all naysayers who equate
Falling in love with historic mistakes

To them I say
It’s no mistake
falling in love
the mistake is
falling out
