Our Old Baggage

Our Old Baggage
(c) 2011
Jemma Lilley

The baggage that we carry round
Which drags our knuckles to the ground
The past mistakes we all regret
The hurts we simply cant forget
The turmoil grief and all the pain
The hardness on our hearts remain
The lies untruths which stab our souls
The anguish burns with gapping holes
Our bodies weary, full of fear
Produce some angry, bitter tears
The ones once loved we cannot trust
We cant forgive but then we must
We grieve and mourn what we have lost
We count up all the priceless cost
We drag this baggage round with us
We take it as we board the bus
We take it shopping at the mall
We take it to the concert hall
We take everywhere we go
We arent aware we do this though
We struggle here and struggle there
We struggle with it everywhere
It clutters up our living space
Despair upon our saddened face
We take it travelling to work
The devil. in our baggage lurks
He steals away our peace and joy
From everybody, girl and boy
Men and women not immune
Sad music plays familiar tunes
He loads our baggage with more fears
Accumulating over years
Our baggage soon it weighs us down
Upon our face a deep etched frown
We then inflict the ones we love
We scream and fight we push and shove
The heaviness upon our minds
The little cracks ithe devil finds
For years we carry this around
And drag our knuckles to the ground.....

But wait!.....LOOK!!!

Oh Joy! we see a shining light!
That lights the dark and scary night
Soon the night it disappears
The bright warm sun dries all our tears
A brilliant glow of peace and love
Radiating from above
Our baggage is now gently taken
Our loving Lord has not forsaken
He picks us up. dusts off the sand
He walks with us hand in hand
And Jesus holds our other one
Our new adventure just begun
They leave our baggage by the road
Relieve us of our heavy load
So we can gain the strength to fight
The demons that taunt us at night
The ghosts which haunt us disappear
The pain's relieved no need to fear
So now that baggage old and worn
Dirty, tattered, broken, torn
Left at the roadside way back there
We cast our worries and our cares
New luggage, we now carry round
No longer drags us to the ground
A lighter smaller load to take
Our burdens lifted for our sake
Its filled with everything we need
Our spirits nourished as we feed
We move away from all the strife
To a better peaceful loving life
Where friends will warmly greet and smile
And walk with us a many mile
So put that tattered baggage down
That drags your knuckles to the ground
Dont wander down that same old track
Leave it now and dont turn back
No stones to stumble as we tread
A solid path the road ahead
Fields of glory, sunlight bright
Our hearts rejoice with pure delight
Before us oh! the vision grand
A gateway to the promised land

What would happen if we decided not to keep carrying our old baggage of the past around with us?
