My Cat

My cat sits
in open window
sniffing air
perched like
great sphinx
great lion
and protector...

My cat hunts
wild in room
running down
imaginary prey
in private Serengeti
bringing down antelope

And other wild beasts.
He climbs trees
purring and cleaning
bathed in moonlight
teasing silly dogs
mockingbird on tree limbs...

Tonight my cat
stares down the moon
rolling over roof tops
eyes of crescent and full
my cat
is king of night...

I've had four cats in my life. I remember my first one because I had her for about eight years until she got run over, her name was Bailey. The second I had for a week, the thing wouldn't stop meowing, it was lonely for it's old home. The third I had for six months, she wouldn't stop puking. The fourth I kept a year and six months. He was always meowing a lonely meow that made me feel guilty. I'm convinced cats belong outside, not in apartments.cats meow cats meow cats meow cats meow chicken
