The Timber Wolf

The Alpha she wolf slipped away
she headed for the outcrop
where she had a den deep in the ground
she knew her time was near
her mate watched her go
knowing he would not be welcome
that she would birth alone
only once their eyes were open
would she let him near
for the meantime he would hunt
leave food by the entrance
while snug and warm within the den
the pups were born nine in all
at three weeks she led them out
letting them play and explore
now she welcomed her mate
proudly she showed off her pups
together they led them down the valley
to where the rest of the pack rested
each one in turn was introduced
now their care would be done by all
the young females would help to nurse
while the immature males would baby sit
for this is how a pack raises the pups
after the adults return from hunting
the pups will jump and bite at their throats
until they regurgitate the meat from the kill
eating until gorged then they sleep and grow
waiting for the day to come
when they will start the cycle over again

About this poem:
the pack is very complex and highly organized. Only the alpha male and female mate, they both can and do stare the others down to stop both fights and non alpha's from mating. There are usually around twelve in a pack. On average they hunt a range of 60 miles in diameter and can run up to 40 miles an hour and cover 50 miles a day.
Non breeding females produce milk and nurse the pups while young males compete to baby sit. They hunt birds and mammals such as deer and caribou and do a howling chorus before the hunt. A litter of pups consist of one to eleven, they are born blind and deaf.

This is so lovely... The picture is stunning... I never knew all this... Though I do love watching wild life on TV... These animals care for their young better than some humans care for theirs. hug purple heart

hi Chrissie you are so right animals are much kinder to each other than us humans. I like watching wildlife documentaries too. One of my guardian spirits is the Timber Wolf so it seemed only fitting to do a write lol. I always research even if I think I know most of the facts I too learnt something today I had not known that females who hadn't given birth could nurse

Reminds me of a book by Farley Mowat, "Never Cry Wolf". Also a fantastic Disney film from the eighties directed by Caroll Ballard, both I have read and watched too many times! Its a stunning story, and your writing reflects this same sentiment. cheers

Hi Globegypsy Ty for your nice comments yes I remember the Disney version like you watched it more times than I like to remember lol some animal story books I have kept from childhood and read time and time again Evelyn Mitchell's books I must have read them more than 2000 times. All my life I have had a love affair with animals especially with horses, dogs and cats

Simply awesome Shadow... both the narrative and photograph, and proof - if proof were needed, that none of us are ever too old to learn, for I have certainly learnt much from this great write.

Kudos

Hi, shadow1950,
The Timber Wolf does much to teach us about community caring that ensures survival. Thanks for sharing. Now, I'm wondering how does one get to be the Alpha?
