A History Lesson

I’ve known you like, since forever
After you came waltzing into my life
But we’ve been out of step for a time
And it’s caused us both some serious strife

Although I’ve always felt your hand on my neck
As you controlled life’s flow around me
While you were determined to keep me in line
I struggled ever harder to break free

This is our very last dance, and you know it
When the music stops this time, I’ll be gone
And you’ll never realize what could have been
Because… you boastfully did me so wrong

You’ve made me suffer for being a disappointment to you
But the hard lessons gave my will strength to survive
If there’s only one memory I’ll take away with me
It’s that your pride made me pay the ultimate price

But even if nobody dares to be my friend
I’m still alone, and there’s no one who cares
Your influence won’t be the guiding factor anymore
And I’ll be damned if I have to sneak out the back stairs

After all these years that I’ve had to steadily focus
While trying to learn all the new steps by myself
More often then not I realized the depth of my weaknesses
That brought me no shame in reaching out to ask for help

You see, once upon a time I only followed your lead
As you stepped on my toes around the floor
Twirling me in circles you dizzied my view
Until I could no longer find my way to the exit door

But, just because you have lots of advantages
And what little I have is difficult to understand
Doesn’t automatically entitle you to even more
If walking on top of vulnerable people is your plan

So, always think before you aspire to stand even higher
As a member of your class works toward an honorary degree
Because it’s the teacher’s place to set the pace in the rat race
While student educational blunders won't be remembered by history
