Marble & Iron

Umber rust kisses the cold iron as it silently stands guard
while wilted flowers decay before markers forgotten,
below, blacken flesh becomes maggots feast
and repulsive souls fester in their coffins.

On this solstice eve an energy released
ripping the bonds of the vainful dead,
casting aside the reverence of the cross
ignoring the many prayers said.

And two young boys, in their carefree teens
do jump irons bars as dust drifts to dark,
with laughter strong and friendship bond they run
past the graves in this sullen yard.

Then one feels the breath across his neck
an icy kiss from one not there,
the second falls with no reason known
sees in the dark an angry stare.

Each breath is marked with billowed mist
for the air is cold as their breathing quickens,
yet from the chill from the damp below
their skin turns wet, their sweat does glisten.

And two young souls with no harm in life
are given to the hunger of evils touch,
for their young spirits taste sweet
to those forever corrupt.

In the darkness of the dead in the cusp of night
the cries could be heard as if all around,
and in the safety of home but blocks from the act
a mother cries for reasons unknown.

And dawns gentle light shone upon iron of rust
for the night has now past, the spirits do rest,
two young boys lie silent and cold in the yard
for good hearts beat no more when spirits have left.

And the people in their sorrow speak of predators and beast
yet no marks on the boys, no clues revealed,
but those who know evil in all shapes and forms
are silenced by ridicule, their lips are but sealed.

Yet some nights in this town, of Midwestern values
in a yard set with markers for those before,
sounds can be heard when no one is present
the sounds cut so clear
as if young boys laughter.......
