montemonte: Someone my age on here called me "doll" and "darling" a few times. I knew it was because of his age because men younger then say 40 wouldn't say that to an old American woman. He didn't mean any harm but I still didn't like it because I felt he was being too forward and I also knew he was interested in me. I never told him I didn't like it because the way our emails were going I knew eventually our communication would end because of something else that was a deal breaker.
There are men and women on here that I've known a long, long time. They call me all kinds of endearments and I actually like it. At the same time, I think I over use the word "hon"/"hun" and I hope that the person wasn't offended. I just said it to someone a couple days ago on here that I never saw before. After I sent the email I questioned myself if maybe he thought I was leading him on, which I wasn't. I think certain cultures don't have a problem with terms of endearment and other cultures won't deal with it.
When in doubt.....don't !
Thanks for this very good and timely input. I totally understand, it's like, I really, really love being hugged--as long as it's by someone I WANT to be hugged by. But how can we always know? A better way to do it, without an appearance of unfriendliness, would be to write back, "Oh, please call me Rosie (or whatever), that's what I like". Then, no one has been nasty, and the groundwork is set without any hard feelings. So often we miss an opportunity to build a bridge, and end up blocking a path. JMO
montemonte: Now back to Libra's post.....I agree completely. I haven't heard a whistle in a long time but I remember when I did, it brightened up my whole day..
never heard it growing up in Canada backwoods...... heard it when I arrived in America.....
