Whom ever this guy is....you got to feel somewhat bad for him. If he is CIA, he is looking at a trial and quick trip to either a wall or a long prison stay. If he is some retired Marine, just vacationing in the country, he is still looking at charges and some court sessions. If is some American that want to see the Aztec ruins in Venezuela. And got caught with a bad map of their locations. Well he is still looking at a trial.
It is clear that Chavez is going to place him on trial. But did he really break the law? He had had some sort of Passport and Identity at the crossing point. And if that destroyed notebook is mine....I can light it on fire and destroy it. My choice. Nothing illegal there. So what is Chavez really going to charge him with? Assaulting a note book?
"Looking like a merc"? Did the guy show up with a red bandana on his head and large hunting knife between his teeth? With a string of M-60 machine gun rounds slung over a shoulder....ala Stalone in Rambo?
Am sorry, But I just had lunch with a retired Navy SEAL Lt Commander....the last person in the world ....you would think was a SoF type. Dressed in a civilian suit and tie...without the black face on. You cannot go by looks. SOF are trained to blend it. They do it pretty well in fact. I was clueless this guy was SOF until we talked.
What ever charges Chavez makes up for the guy. The International community needs to step up to the plate and call him to provide the evidence on them all. Not some kangeroo court, like the Chinese murder trial of Mrs Bo.....7 hours long and a guilty plea at the end. The guilty plea likely saved her life. That is how it works in China. And how it works in Chavez's country most of the time.
If this get to trial, will Preisdent Obama do what he did with the three lose packers in Iran? Deny that they were any part of the CIA...or were spies. Then get extorted to get him out? Like he was in Iran?
This is getting old. A American crosses border some place and they jerk him/her in jail just for having old glory for a flag. I do know this....Mr. Chavez has a small company in the US called CITGO....I can see a small rebellion coming at the CITGO stations real soon if this guy gets a kangeroo court sentence.

US should Nationalize CITGO and see how Hugo would like it!
This is starting to remind me of all the garbage in Luanda, Angola back in 1976 with the trials and executions of ten British mercs, including the Cypriot Greek George Georiou, aka "Col. Calan" who also killed fellow mercs and the one poor US vietnam vet who got caught, having just arrived there, Daniel Gearheart. SOF magazine staff where the only ones that tried to get him out with legal help...Very sad story. I still feel so sorry for him and his family. Others, including several more US vets from Vietnam managed to elude the Angolan commies until finally picked up by SA recce SAS troops and brought everyone to Salisbury. It was a long and bloody run. Only 9 out of 35 made it out. (RIP)

I see it the same way, Soltiare. This guy is a political pawn caught in the middle of two Presidents running for re-election. One wants to hang him and other wants to put a medal on his chest.
In the end, Chavez gets the say. And he has the rope.
Hugo Chavez is claiming to have captured a American merc that had entered his country illegally. After 'interviews' the hispanic man is said to be a former US Marine. When detained, he was tearing up geographical locations within the Venezuela
President Chavez is in a election year and is campaigning for re-election. In the past he warned his country of a 'American invasion'.
FARC drugs often pass thru his country. To the point that President Chavex has stopped all USA DEA activities in his country. This after the DEA had compromised high ranking Veneseulian government officials in the drug operations.
The US is requesting to speak to the man. Claiming that a US citizen rights in the foreign country might be violated. They expect the Vensuelain government to honor this request shortly.
So your opinion to this international incident?
Not that big of an incident when one considers this happens all the time in the US. Last I heard, there were millions of people in the US who entered illegally. Are they Mercs? Who knows but they're illegal nonetheless.

Hi Sparky....here is the difference. Chavez arrests the Mercs as they enter the country. Here we provide the Drug cartels) with weapons prior to entering the country.
You know America, the land of opportunity.............
You can understand Hugo being a bit edgy. I mean your authorities did give full support to the far right vermin who tried to kill him and overthrow his democratically elected government. Not to mention the fact ye have a nasty habit of interfering in Latin America and installing your puppets as dictators.
Chavez, though not perfect, has empowered millions of his citizens, citizens ignored by that country's pro-American puppet governments for decades.

Thanks for the update and bump. We will certainly take this new information on the American hispanic male arrested by Hugo Chavez's border security into consideration.
At this time Hugo still have not release any details to his identity....maybe he is the mysterious far right vermin without a name kind of guy.....that was sent by the most liberal President in American history to overthrow Hugo Chavez.....

If South American dictators would stop hugging communist empires and providing missile bases from which to threaten the US I'm sure things would go a bit smoother. As far as Chavez and US government support for his assassination what the heck are you talking about?

If he were truly to empower them he would have stepped down to allow free elections. He has not as he is a dictator. The left loves dictators for some reason.

It common knowledge Albert that the US has attempted on a nearly daily schedule to assignate Hugo Chavez since he came to power in the country. All of Venezuela knows it......

Likely we are going to get a White House leak on this guy in Venezuela before Hugo tells us anything. They call them 'preemptive leaks'. You leak the mission before it happens, just in case it goes bad.

I have been attempting to think of a cute reply to this for hours. But it just makes to much sense as it is......great insight from down under!

So is that what US did to the 'Banking' firms who stole hard-earned money of their own citizens, which includes retired folk? Seen the Docu-movie "Inside Job"? Oh Pls.. I can't say Grow-UP to you Grandpa, but wisen up. Its high time..

Excuse me. Are you feeling sorry for the mercenaries (killers-on-hire)? Well, we saw more of their ilk in the Iraq invasion. Black..something right? 'Legal' avatar of 'killers-on-hire..

The indigenous ppl of the land called America were the Indians (Columbus nomenclature) as we know. Then ppl came out from europe and invaded North & South America. So pls.. 'illegal' immigrants
