Ourselves. How can we possibly meet the needs of another person until we are able to fulfil our own. How would we know what to do? Loving others first sounds very noble and very romantic but it's extremely unhealthy. Co-dpendancy 101. :)

If you don't know how to fulfill you own needs, then you are a positive liability to your kids. You can't transmit what you don't have. Sometimes what we want. even as adults, is not good for us.

This is not a simple, nor a linear question as you ask.
Although I agree with GG, unless we look after ourselves, we don't have the resources to look after others, you don't define what you mean by "care". Is that physical, or emotional needs? Educational? Primary, secondary, or tertiary needs? What?
Its not linear in as much as we might care for others until our reserves in some way are depleted and then we have to take a break to recharge our own batteries and in so doing prioritise ourselves for a while. Then we may go back to caring for others again.

Question? I agree that we need to take care of ourselves, however I think that too much care can turn to indulgences, and selfishness and self-centered thinking.
Perhaps it is a matter of treating others as we would treat ourselves. I think I'll treat myself to a cup of coffee at the philosopher's corner....
When it is necessary to give care to others, it comes naturally if it has been shown to you along the way. Caring for oneself is vital too, to give the strength to be able to think of other people.
Jean..........you got anything on for St Andrews????? I´ve got 6 dances planned for after the dinner tonight......wanna join us????

JeanKimberley: I'll bite..... why not "any other" - and please be a little bit more creative in your rants about women and people who don't support your views....
Well, the others that you personally know come in as the most valued others - where biology/emotion/morality outrank anything else - some of them may be more important than yourself.
Then there's the others that directly effect you which fall under your enlightened self-interest. For example, it's in your enlightened self-interest to help your local community, because you live in it but, it's not in your enlightened self-interest to do the same for an African community.

Doesn´t mean you care any the less tho. It´s just kinda difficult to put the caring into practice.
Jean........St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland and there will be festivites. We have a Caledonian Society here in Spain,(they´re all over the place those Scots) so we´ve organised ours. There´ll be KILTS everywhere.........wheeeeeeeeeee

Yes we have Scottish American Societies all over here, and of course I belong to the one in South Florida - Bobby Burns dinner and ceilidh are sometime in the month of December.... I'd fly anywhere for a kilted party!

ru4eva: If I knew, I wouldn't of asked...
Well I'm going to assume that by ourselves you mean ones own kind,so I'd say ourselves,to the extent of family/friends,community and for myself I'd say country, thats my kind and if we can help others then great, but we should care for ourselves more no doubt.

JeanKimberley: I did really want to know - so may I ask? - you believe that kindness to others is a sign of weakness?
Apathy, deception, lies, indifference to fact & ignorance are not kindness.
It's just fluff for the fuzzy feeling.. it would be kinder to sacrifice your own popularity for the sake of the truth than it is to placate with lies and falsehoods.
Although I just look at it as practicing intellectual hygiene, as I don't like to frame it in terms of morality, as people - especially the herd - can moralise literally anything no matter how weak, failed or disgraceful it is.
everything that we offer others is the mirror of who we are ourselves. if this treat is about the emotional plane then I think we should start with ourselves.
