I agree with u.. particularly on ur point 'Any form of philosophy that excludes such essential qualities is in my view worthless and empty - mental m**turbation if you like'

over intellectualisation can be very counter productive, I also think that over quoting other peoples theories (as if they are indisputable thruths incapable of being challenged) lack insight and imagination..

This is why contributions from people like urself (reluctant philosophers) tend to be alot more insightful wink

alright I apologize for leaving you in a quandry ...

the interpretation is included below that line ....however I will attempt to expound..

many people follow a faith and its leaders to death without any proof that where their going is actually a sound/wise place to be.

One example and there are many as I have stated is :
terrorists in the name of god and allah whoever and his teachings (sometimes reworked by the leader for his own designs) strap bombs to themselves for the purpose of dying to reach heaven in the name of god.

You'll need to show me heaven before that makes any sense at all.
Faith doesn't come from god or scripture, beleif in faith does perhaps as misplaced as it is. Faith resides, like hope within you...

hmmm.. ... I thought ther emust be a religious interpetation to this one.. you know.. hidden meaning sort of thing.

Everytime i visit the temple ... i am smitten by my own faith in the supreme being.. and everytime i try to reason it out .. theres more logic to disbelief than there is to blind faith. Like you say " show me heaven " i feel i need something to see to realise and to accept. But then again ther eis what one calls belief in faith.

A Maze it is !!

Us, that is my faith - the things which we can feel and touch and see - I have no faith in centuries old traditions which blind people to the essence of the innate goodness of my fellow human beings - I read the essential documentation of many religions and find only efforts to blind people to any other way of life or thinking - the very essence of 'religion' means to have faith in a particular teaching - why are we not allowed or encouraged to validate the teachings of each new prophet on their own merits - all this stuff which comes from antiquity bears less and less fruit as the years pass - lets make a bit of sense of the here and now - much as it distresses me to have only one season of goodwill, I have to state that I wish all of you, all the best of goodwill, as my fellow human beings, no matter what your belief thread - for all of eternity

which of us are right or wrong - just because I have an opinion which may differ from the vast majority of you does not mean I wish you as much well on your journey that I would wish even for my womb bourne children - whats the flippin problem dunno

it is truely ... thumbs up

I do not disgree with faith nor the words and there intent. Most are written as guidelines, an attempt by man to moralize and hence keep people on the good path. No fault there. We need that, needed it to come out of the dark ages.

the problem for me, I repeat for me, is in proof as well. I can find much proof to beleive in myself, to beleive in you and many of my friends here at CS ... yet I can find none in any single god.

In beleiving in a god, I can only find misery, deception and man profitting for their own purpose.

my story was a pointed joke ... a very cruel joke, a metaphor if you will for religious devotees unable to find faith in themselves and their loved ones... a cruel joke perpetrated by man in the name of gods.

And I am not suggesting you give up faith in religion, praying together, hoping together is a great and marvelous thing. if there are any gods it us, as one having faith that good and understanding will prevail.

Thanks Riya - I guess that what I am saying is that I have an abhorrence of exclusionary theology - sorry, that is how I am - every single one of us has just as much right as the next person, to form an opinion without being it denigrated as heresy and therefore warranting punishment

I was brought up not to question - how can that be right, surely the survival of people elicits the need to question - surely - we cannot go through life in some kind of blind haze dunno

I would be happy to learn.

I was brought up with the notion of religion and God too but somehow i find myself on a boat sailing with the wind in a direction unknown.. neither here nor there ..

"In beleiving in a god, I can only find misery, deception and man profitting for their own purpose."

I think u r a bit confused.. 'god' (or whatever one calls that great spiritual entity that so many people over the centuries and accross the world identify with) is not at fault surely... I place blame squarely at the door of Religion, which last time I looked was the domain of man confused

Hi, Bnatural, so,what do you think god is then - do you think it is this all encompassing Christian god of judgment and all that you shouldnt question - or do you think we should be freely allowed to ask whatever come from out hearts?

I believe in right & wrong, good and evil, and I believe in love. I believe we're not alone in the universe. I don't like labels or categories for people or thier beliefs. People varry so much within thier own "categories". The word "christian" holds different meaning for different people and I expect the same holds true with other religions.

me too Riya, none of us really know the answer and to assert that we do, is only to bring upon ourselves - ridicule - hug

There is no need for an answer to this quandry - we contibnue as a species, as do our thoughts, our enlightenment and our very being - none is more important, some are simply more pertinent to 'time'

hey you asked and I have posted this before.

I am a super inquistive person, requiring proof or least some bread crumbs, a trail if you will leading to the proof.

I must say first that what I am going to relay is by no means absolute proof, but if proof is any aid to reality; then it comes close enough for me to investigate further and accept as a reasonable possibility.

As a child I was born catholic, sent to catholic schools where priests and nuns visited often, for religious classes.
We were expected to keep the faith and be subjected to teachings therein. Being inquisitive I often asked "who is god, where the heck is he, whats he look like?" Of course the answers I got at the time seemed dubious, and patronizing to me, none of them really gave me any solid footing on which to hang my hat. (can you hang hats on your feet?).

They (priest and nuns) said things like. "god is all knowing, god is everywhere, god is all powerful, god always was, always is and always will be; ...and more obsequious revere to boot.

Needless to say I soon fell from grace, stopped attending catholic school and all the nonsense. I'd already already learned Santa and easter bunny were perpetrated hoaxes so I wasnt willing to succumb to the seeming drivle on god either.

Fast forward to high school where physics and science come into play, factually, something I can sink my teeth into; as well as being awed by metaphysical studies I involved myself in. I found out there was this thing called 'energy' and that energy was all powerful, it is everywhere, it cannot be created nor destroyed, basic facts, it can only be transformed, hence it always is, always was, always will be. Striking parallels to a 'god' I would venture to say. Adding to that the fact that all living things are of energy, energy being everywhere; include things like premonitions and knowing what your partner is about to say sometimes and you get ... all knowing if you practice this ability.

Again I do not accept it irrefuteably at this point, but since there are bread crumbs, parallels and facts to support it I find myself thinking that god is US. In theory it explains the good and bad of man and hence god by extension.

So thats where I am these days..thanks for asking.

thumbs up I agree.. when anyone ever asks me what religion I am I say that I was designated Catholic... but was very young at the time, so had no say in the matter.. what religion we are appears to be less about faith and more about what family/part of the world we were born into smile
