Ok... I gotta get technical here. The term "horror" came about during the old Dracula, werewolf films with such greats as Vincent and Bella. So if you want to get picky... that genre is the true horror film which has unfortunately, for me, disintegrated into pure blood, guts and gore. I like the old ones best "Psycho" being one of the best ever and never did you actually see any physical violence... but it still scared the crap out of you!
It might not scare many today because there is such an overwhelming amount of violence and blood in movies that people have become numb to it all.

i agree with you point, but during the 70s i think horror movies kinda took off in thier own direction and became different from the traditional scary movies. i also agree that some of the older ones are actually better movies!
Out of your list, id have to say for the times, Freddy was the greatest. The writers were deffinately more creative with the killings in the freddy movies then the others. you also have to look at your list you had characters from Horror/suspence such as the exorsist and Carrie , and the slasher/thriller movies such as the friday the 13th, and nightmare on elm street movies. And then its harder to make a choice becuase the dynamic is changed..either way is a great list, and each horror movie character is great in its own way..you know who you forgot to mention though PUMPKIN HEAD lol and not was a corny, yet amusingly entertaining horror movie. But great thread here, i couldnt think of a better topic to talk about

i wasnt sure about putting carrie and excorcist on there. guess i put em on just because of the pure shock factor when they were released. remember the craziness around the excorcist.

No, not picky at all, love... I agree!
Film-makers nowadays are in competition with each other as to who can provide the biggest shock-factor, i.e. blood and gore, yes. Even now, some of the classics invoke a more psychological nreve-twitching, hide-behind-the-sofa kind of "horror/scary" and that is what its about, not sensationalism?
One film, "Haunted House of Horror" from the early 70s is one that sticks in my mind even now. You can imagine the special effects were pretty inadequate compared to now but it still scared the living crap outta me!!

Also a fantastic movie...either one the original and the remake were both great...altho they really over did it with the like 3 or 4 straight to dvd sequals, after the remake. you what other "scary" movies i liked, the "Final destination" movies, more suspence scary then slasher, but had some really really, original and highly creative deaths in those movies

Mercedes1: Chainsaw Massacre nearly killed me
Are you talking about the original or the remake?
The original was banned in the UK for something like 30 years and has not long been allowed to be shown. Here's an example of how sappy and pathetic I am with horror (even the old ones)....
Late one night, it came on and after the lifting of the ban, I decided to see what all the fuss was about, knowing that special effects in those days (this was the original Chainsaw Massacre) were not as we expect now. Easy....
The film starts, music (ohh yess... its all in the music!). There are some teenage American students in a camper-van, break down/run out of gas? They see a house across some corn-fields and decide (as you probably would?) to go to the house for help.... so far, so good? They are crossing the field.... THE MUSIC.... ohhhh, God!!! Very eerie... Nope, can't watch any more, switch over, too scared!! They hadn't even got to the bloody house, the credits hadn't even finished....
gemini37: did anyone like rob zombies version of halloween better the orgiginal. i thought zombies added a whole new edge to myers
i agree did open up a whole new scope for the myers movies...i actually liked the Rob Zombie house of 1000 corpses too, and the devils rejects...bad acting but decent story line, and plenty of slasher gore

Okay, the scariest when I was a child was definitely Freddy Krueger and every time I had a nightmare about him I thought I'd never wake up because he'd kill me. Plus, when I got older I appreciated his character more because of how original in his own right he was. Yeah, it was a slasher flick, but not like Jason or Mike because they were relentless and chased you all the time, never letting up, but Freddy would put you into that false secure blanket until you fell asleep. He couldn't get you while you were awake, so you were safe, but you had to never sleep again, easy right? Nope.
Nowadays, Leatherface scares because I'm deathly afraid of chainsaws and every time I here one I want to run as fast as I can. What about Pennywise from It or that creepy old guy from Poltergeist 2, he creeped me out. My mom used to be afraid of Dracula, but laughed at Exorcist when she and her sisters went to see it in the theaters, she told me it looked like pea soup she was barfing up.
gemini37: i love that movie!!! ive seen it so many times, but damn, that clown had personality, huh
"we all float down here" lol classic, i can still scare the crap out of my sister by sneakin yp behind her and sayin that...she is terrified of clowns...so of course i get her birthday cards with clowns every years, and put little clown dolls on her bed all the time i know im baaad!! lol

out of the options given I voted for Jason, I like Myers but Jason just edges it for me.
If you were to broaden the range, out of them all I would choose Lon Chaney Jnr as THE WOLFMAN, he had such sadness/pathos as Larry Talbot and as the wolfman scared the crap out of me.
I like the John character from the SAW films because theres so much humanity in him, so much practicality and logic and this is what leads to his insane premise for Torture/self sacrifice as a way to survive and atone for ones sins, cleverly done.
A mention for Frankensteins creation also, a kindly figure in the first 2 films and then becomes quite monsterous, scary thing he is...Karloff is GOD!
