Cant say I know who the first one is either. And I couldnt quote any songs from the second but have heard the name. Looking at the photos I would say the first one would be a much more interesting person.

I dont know if I would put it down to looks solely. Marketing is everything in the music industry. If your song gets played on the radios more often people get to know it and you become more popular. People like songs they know.

I don't know the first one either, but I disagree with you about why Alicia Keys gets better marketing. Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Diana Summers, Bionce...I could keep going. There have been many female black singers/songwriters who have made it to the truly big time. India Arie needs to get a better manager if she's got that much talent and isn't making it to being as big as she should. Don't use it as a race issue, because it's not. There are many talented white singers/songwriters who don't make it as big as they should either.
