When I lived in Southern Cal we had an Ocelot.Never had to worry to awfully much about burglars or harming our sons when they were little.
We lived in a upstairs apartment with a balconey.Well one day my late husband and I went out to do some shopping. While we were gone someone had broke into our apartmet. When we walked farther inside we noticed that the sliding screen out to the balconey was damaged Saw Ocee standing on the balconey.Ocee was the kind of cat that would let someone in our apartmet but he just wouldn't let anyone leave. Well anyway Ocee had cornnered the burgler and the guy had no way out but down.
My late husband called the police while I went to get the lead for Ocee. When the police arrived we placed the lead on Ocee and the burgler gladly went along.
Sure I'd loved to have another big kitty cat but it's impossible to have one.

wow, great story! that was a fantastic cat you had! ocelots are very nice.it sounds like it was very inteligent and loyal great story, thanks
which big cat are you referring to? for example, a lion in the wild will live an average of 9-10 years and that is a long time in the wild. In craptivity they will live longer maybe 19-30 years...so the questions is "when are you going to take a vacation?" Simply because who are you going to get to come over and feed them, some relative or friend who volunteers and really hasn't a clue of how to deal with them? They do not belong in cages and they are not human no matter what human attributes people place on them. They are real nice kitties and have all the mannerisms of a house cat including rubbing up against the leg of a sofa...the only difference is they are strong enough to push the sofa through the wall. There have been some amazing stories of co-habitation of big cats and humans, but these are exceptions to the average reality.

A Great movie : Second Hand Lions... Bob Duvall & Michael Caine
There is a guy & his wife in New Zealand that raises lions & white tigers. I saw a several part documentary on them on a PBS channel. Really incredible!

well said .i refer to all the big cats,as some people in the u.s.a keep lions, tigers, puma's,etc as 'pets'.yes,it would be difficult for a stranger to feed them!
That is, such a bad bad idea! Big cats (as well as other animals that can easily maul if not kill and eat you!) should only be in the wild or raised and kept by people trained and equipped to deal with them (ie. zoos and sanctuaries).
The general idiot who is only looking for something cool to have, is only going to get himself/herself and perhaps others hurt if not killed, and then the animal itself will likely be killed... nobody wins, and the animal is the only 1 who had no choice in the scenario!
Not long ago, some people who were keeping 2 pet tigers not far from where I live accidentally left the pen door unlatched and the tigers got out and loose in the neighborhood... needless to say, a few dogs were killed by the tigers, people in the area were terrified, and the tigers were both finally found and shot dead (you'd think somebody would have brought tranqilizer guns and used them instead, but heck no they used live ammunition on the terrified animals!). Unfortunately, the cat's owners didn't even face any charges for this fiasco and it makes me furious that they even had the big cats and were so very careless with them... and the cats are both dead now.
Large predatory animals (as well as smaller venomous reptiles and spiders) should not be allowed to be kept as pets... it's wrong, people too often get hurt and the animals if not mistreated often end up dead for no good reason.
What really get's me miffed is that I have to pay the state here nearly $100 a year for a permit to keep the orphaned baby raccoons people bring me. I'm inspected regularly by game warden's, have to show I'm taking good care of the kiddos and have all the pen doors padlocked and latched 3 different ways... yet if I wanted a pet tiger, giant constrictor snake, venomous spiders or whatever I could get one with no permits required whatsoever here! Dogs maul far more people every year in this state than raccoons ever will, and yet dogs require no permit either! It's insane.

thanks for that great comment ,and well done to you for caring for,and caring about animals by the way,my cousin has a pet tarantula.i think i would prefer the cats!
Has anyone ever seen a leopard in a magic act or 3-ring circus? I'll answer it for you since I haven't time to monitor the forum. If you have a leopard, at some point in the relationship someone is going to die.

well said Michael and very true. The people who owned the tigers should have been put in jail or out in the jungle to walk among the tigers to see how they like the opportunity to be food for them.
You know that raccoons do get meaner as they get older, so anyone keeping them as pets faces an inherent risk of being bitten. Good work with what your doing with them.

They had a program for the little lions and the baby tigers that were sent to other zoos. She said it was like being a moma. so cute and cuddle she had to remember they were wild. She was studying to be a vet at the time. Says she would never trade the experience for anything.

Well it would be cool. Here kitty kitty, "ROAR!" scratch, scratch, bite. hmmm. But women are much like cats anyway and having a woman around is like having a big cat around.
Then you can play with that tiger anytime you want and she may not scratch or bite either.
