scousedon: Ah i should have clarified my question and say next friday is Xmas day so will devout christians go without traditional roast for the fish option ???
with my mum & family its a traditional roast , Oh and she will make sure there is always too much
scousedon: Was wondering as I have a devout Christian friend who eats fish every friday and is going through turmoil as he wants a turkey next friday.
Well, I don't like seafood, so I don't eat fish on any day of the week
But, as you probably know from your son...almost every Friday is fasting day in the Orthodox Church. There are only a couple of Friday's which are not fasting days... And even on many fasting days, Fish is not allowed.
As for next Friday...It is Christmas on the new calender, so unless your friend celebrates old calender Christmas (like I do), then next Friday is a feast day and not a fast day, so he can eat Turkey.
I ate fish for the first 20 or so years of my life; then the Catholic Church decided we wouldn't go to hell if we ate a cow!!! Go figure!!! Fish is now really optional and only if it is the special at the resuaurant with some nice crab on top of it.

Well my friend is devout roman catholic Alexey and according to him any friday is a fish day.

interesting. I did not know that they consider every Friday to be a fish day. Well, different religion, different rules and beliefs. The best thing for him to do then, would be to talk with his confessor/priest about this.

Big_John: This was changed many years ago. Catholic's can eat anything they want with the exception of a few days each day.
I admit John I don't know but he is adamant he cannot eat fish on christmas day because it is friday. I would not mind but he reckons he hates fish. I can never understand either that he smokes for 325 days a year but packs in for lent and goes back to smoking 40 a day

In the USA Catholic can eat meat except during holy days of obligation and Christmas, of course, is one of them. Most of the days are during Lent which you might remember starts the end of Mardi Gras and stops at Easter. Others days are there also, but we can eat meat and don't have to eat fish every Friday.
There are some/many Catholics that still follow the 'old' ways and never eat meat on Friday.

Yes, I can not understand this either. There are many reasons to do fasting, or to give up something during lent. But, I think if you are going to do these things, then they should be done properly, not only because it is a rule. I realized that when I was fasting, that I was following the rules for what not to eat, but that was it. And I was missing the entire reasons for fasting. It is suppose to be a time of purification, and purifying your soul. So, you fast in many ways and sense. It is also a time for making yourself better, increase prayers, and developing further spirituality. And these things that you learn and do or sacrifice should stay with you after. That is what you are suppose to gain from the proper fasting. You should feel rejuvenated after a fast, feel the increased spirituality that you have obtained, and overall closer feeling to God. And, when I fast properly I feel this gain and it stays with me for a while...but when don't fast fully or properly, I don't really feel anything. Just feel like I am doing it because I am suppose to. So, I am missing the meaning.

I don't know about that, but why not try to eat fish? There's nothing wrong with that! I don't eat all kinds of fish here, I only eat Tilapia, Flounder and Salmon. Fried Tilapia is good and baked Salmon too. Try it!
