deacon6347: I eat fish whenever the craving comes, be it friday or tuesday. WHY DO YOU ASK?? Do you asssume Catholics are the only Christians? Because they are the only Christians I know of who are expected to live by that silly rule!! Fish on friday.....INDEED!!!
It is a good question. And no, he does not assume the are the only Christians. And the Orthodox Church holds a fast too. And you should think about Christianity The original Christian Churches were the Orthodox and Catholic Church (they were one Church, which suffered a Schism, but we won't go into that now...and its debatable which Church is the schismatic one, anyway we won't get into that either here ). So, The original Christian Church has a fasting rule. So, it is a very good question.
As for all other Christian Churches or branches, they were all formed through later Schisms, and a lot of them scratched many of the doctrines and believes held by the original Church. Fasting being one of them. So, it is not a silly rule, there is many reasons to fasting. A silly thing is to throw away doctrine to make a lifestyle more hip or convenient.
alexey8: Yes, I can not understand this either. There are many reasons to do fasting, or to give up something during lent. But, I think if you are going to do these things, then they should be done properly, not only because it is a rule. I realized that when I was fasting, that I was following the rules for what not to eat, but that was it. And I was missing the entire reasons for fasting. It is suppose to be a time of purification, and purifying your soul. So, you fast in many ways and sense. It is also a time for making yourself better, increase prayers, and developing further spirituality. And these things that you learn and do or sacrifice should stay with you after. That is what you are suppose to gain from the proper fasting. You should feel rejuvenated after a fast, feel the increased spirituality that you have obtained, and overall closer feeling to God. And, when I fast properly I feel this gain and it stays with me for a while...but when don't fast fully or properly, I don't really feel anything. Just feel like I am doing it because I am suppose to. So, I am missing the meaning.
Sorry, I have rambled on a bit
yup...that`s a good reason just for a second try to look it as a message for the future.... when food will not be so available as it is in this present

scousedon: Well I am not that clued up on the Roman Catholic faith, just thought my friend was being just awkward and of the old school.
I know some Catholics make up their own rules, it is kind of weird, like some old women still wearing vails in church when there is no rules, so your friend is making himself follow some old rule, but I guess that is his own way of making sacrifices.
scousedon: Was wondering as I have a devout Christian friend who eats fish every friday and is going through turmoil as he wants a turkey next friday.
My parents were hard-core catholic godbots when I was growing up (they still are, AFAIK), "Latin Mass" despite not speaking a word of it, but would only go meatless on Friday for easter...oddly, they would never touch pork at any time.
And that was before the catholics changed the rules about meat on Friday.
