The English language has evolved from two main sources:
Latin, and the Romance languages falling under its umbrella: Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Romanian.
The other major influence on modern day English is the old Germanic and Scandinavian languages. Before the year 1066, and the Norman Conquest, the English language was primarily a Germanic/Scandinavian tongue. After the Norman Conquest, the Romance languages began to highly influence and creep in to the English language.
Whenever a country is invaded by another, the invading country's language will inevitably "contaminate" the present language.
Over time, other languages have begun to infiltrate the English language. Yiddish and even Hungarian words have crept in.
