well that kind of stag should be hunted alright !!! id be against a ban on that !!! a stag do makes a night out in my town , they are always such good craic !!!
ellimere: i didnt know we had stags in ireland !!!
it should be monitered and set up a permit system and a quota limit in accordance with the number of stags living in the country !!!
As far as I know their bred especially for the hunt. There's practically zero wild stags. Most of the 'Hunters' come over from England to chase them down.
I'd personally be in favour of a ban. However, a lot of farmers believe legislation in this regard to be the 'thin end of the wedge'.

what do they do with the animal after they catch it ???

It's normally ripped apart by the dogs. The 'Hunters' sometimes wipe some of the blood on their faces as a kind of ritual/initiation. I understand that little (if any) of the stag is consumed by the 'Hunters'.

thats pointless so , if they were selling the meat of even eating it them selves that would be grand !! but just mindless killing for sport is cruel and is a waste !!!
The organised hunting of stags as in the ward hunt has no place in a modern civilised society, it is cruel to the animal and how anyone can find enjoyment from chasing a beast to exhaustion with a pack of hounds is beyond my understanding. However deer have no natural predator in this country so it is necessary and natural to keep their numbers in check, a hunter with a gun has to trek miles across mountains and woodland and will more often than not be outwitted and fail to make a kill, I see this as a fair contest between man and beast. Its not a city v country thing either as the deer in the pheonix park have to be culled every year or else they would overgraze the land and starve to death. it is our duty to look out for animals welfare but in a non cruel and humane way.

I think you're mixing up fox hunting with stag hunting. Stags are shot with high power rifles from a distance.

Unfortunately that isn't always the case, the ward hunt in county meath hunt farmed stag with horse and a pack of deerhounds, a barbaric and cruel pastime which they refer to as sport, at the moment the government is trying to ban it.

My mistake. I assumed it was the same as Scotland where they track the wild stags over mountains and the like. Dogs would be no use in that terrain.

Normally it's gutted where it falls and the innards are left for the normal clean up brigade that is in nature... birds, smaller animals, foxes and the like.
The rest is brought to a butcher and, well, butchered.
Venison, depending on the cut, is very tasty if 'hung' right. Some parts can be a bit gamey though.
Note: A good hunter will aim for the neck and hit it. Death is instantaneous and painless.

That's the type of hunting that I was thinking of. And it's no more cruel than a bull getting a bolt in the head at the abbatoir and a good deal less cruel than what happens to pigs.
I dont agree with hunting the deer with dogs that aint right but where i live there are a lot of wild deer and they do a lot of damage to crops and even peoples gardens as well so i think when numbers get too high they need to be managed.

I like that word...managed...!
Could someone manage my old millionaire widowed mother too?
