While I have no interest in hunting or bloodsports, I also have no interest in dictating to hunters about what a vocal minority perceive they do or don't do. A friend of mine is a journalist for one of these "Country Life" Magazines and he tells me that in the vast majority of hunts, the chased animal is rarely caught, regardless of it being a stag, fox or even a hare and most of those who hunt go for the social aspect alone.
Those that will be affected by such a ban will be exclusively those who partake in the hunt itself and I can't help but think that there is a certain issue of anti snobbery in banning stag hunting regardless of the welfare issues at hand. My life won't be any worse or better after a ban nor will most of us but the only perceived winners will be those in the PC brigade who have lobbied for the ban; even then they gain nothing but self satisfaction from it all.
delamer: Fair enough. I understand there's a big difference between culling deer and an organised stag hunt though with horses and dogs. Lets face it - Farmers are worried that large bore rifles would be banned. JMO
i had to get a couple guys in last year cos a family of deer moved into my barley, they destroyed ten aces of it. i tried to apply for a special license to shoot out of season but it would have took weeks. how much damage do u think they'd have done in that time. to quote somethin i read as a child, pest must be kept down ,to keep a well run farm. stag hunting is dif and i don't think it should be allowed.
Hunting for survival or prevention of harm to people or crops as a last resort is just about acceptable. Hunting for pleasure is wrong I think. If you need to hunt for pleasure then it should be made a level playing field involving no guns or other animals i.e. hunt the animals on foot and with your bare hands.
But banning it wont stop it unless it is enforced. Badgers are supposed to be protected but the farmers here still kill them by sending dogs down the den after them.
scarwolve: there are birds being reintroduced to ireland and again the farmers are killing them off its a absolute shame to see this happen
thats happening and it shouldn't be, i've a few of them big birds flying around my farm, incl falcons and a kestrel. every year i sow a mix of seeds that feed the birds all year round, i get paid for it but i think its a great idea. u see a lot of wildelife around where i am. but badgers and deer are 2 things i don't wanna see, there dirty and they do a lot of damage
PASSION8MAN: If you dont have anything intelligent to add then piss off
I am a tower of information and have plenty of intelligent views to add which is more than what can be said about you, telling people to piss off, You have shown yourself
U mean u didnt have to be licensed b4?? ....thats crazy
I think it would be more beneficial to ban stag hunting or at least keep it monitored like some ppl said. Failte Ireland statistics shows tourists main reason for coming into Ireland is for its beauty and unspoilt environment, with scenery being the second reason for travelling. We should preserve the wildlife, the number of people travelling here for stag hunting is very small compared to those travelling for the unspoilt environment, so its in our interest to monitor the number of stag hunters.
I can only think of two parks that people can actually visit and see deer, Killarney and Powerscourt Gardens..is there more???
