yes you are right..I do get good ratings...I hardly ever get an 8 ......I may thank ppl I am familiar with but most times I dont. Not sure if its necessary

photo votes are funny, i don't take them seriously, like on one pic i get lots of 10's while on another just a 5 - at the end its still me so ppl aren't really voting on you but on that particular pic.
As for thanking only did it once, don't think it means much really, its not as if they'll go out with you... Maybe the best thing to do is to rate them back?
