maybe the biggest number is a 9as all numbers from then on are expressed using all the previous smaller ones 1,2,3...etc

Only true for base 10 numbers! Hexidecimal would give a largest digit as F (decimal 15) and a base of n would give a largest digit of (n-1)!
Also if there's any Mathematics Phds out there, I suspect there's all sorts of theories involving non Euclidean geometry!
