I have mixed feelings on this, have known it to go horribly wrong and a few couples, at least in public, very happy.

Poor kids / girls they haven't a clue at a young age and are taught to do as they are told and follow tradition they don't know any better. Too bad if they are unhappy. 
Although sometimes it's the guy who doesn't want it so have to feel for them too. Glad I don't live in these countries what a sh**t life.

She probably was happy but for how long? She's only sixteen! I couldn't even choose the right subjects at school at that age and would have been quite happy if my mother had chosen for me!
But I do know a couple whose marriage was arranged by their families due to cultural/religious beliefs and they are very happy together. However the families (mothers) suggested prospective partners for them (both the man and the woman) and then they made the final decision. I think it can work in some cultures but not in ours.

vilakshanbudhi: coming from a country where arranged marriages are prevalent,all I can say is that you there are huge misconceptions regarding arranged marriages.It usually happens between people of same age,both of which are mature enough to think about themselves.The only difference is that entire famile is involved in the decision making(they only advice,final decision has to be taken by the girl and boy).And all the factors such as beauty,financial stability,intellect,education ar taken into consideration while making the decision.Works well in a society where collectivism prevails and not individualism.These marriages have proved to be much stable.This doesn't mean this institution is perfect.It has its own drawbacks but so is love marriage.
Often comes down also to the fact when we are talking about "Love Marriages" that people even above 16 make stupid choices- - - - So it is two bladed sword - - - depends simply on two people that are actually getting married - - - One can never know - - - how many people here on CS has been married by their free will, and choice, now they are single and looking, divorced with kids - - - so much about “Love marriages” that come from our own choices - - - the smart one's simply dodged the bullet and never got married ( Like me ) - - - - Cos I am almost certain if I would marry the girl I almost have I will be now divorced with at least one kid - - -
