I don't know how things work where you are, but here if you start doing any work on the house before the legal transfer of ownership goes through you may be charged occupational rent by the owners. Transfer can take several months so be careful. Great ideas for decorating! Wish you much happiness in your new home. 
Never mind, most of us are still looking, too. Next year...it will all happen next year. 
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. You have every right to grieve in whatever way and for however long you need. Don't ever allow anyone to tell you how you must feel, not only in these circumstances but generally, too. I wish you comfort and support during this time and that life will become kinder and easier to bear as the days go by. You are not alone.

It's close to the truth for me though, having been left to make my own way to the hospital in absolute agony by a partner who insisted on finishing his round of golf before taking me.
Basically it means they think you're great but are over qualified for the particular position. It also means they think you might not be happy with the salary they're offering for that post. If they should say no, give them a call and ask to have your CV kept on file for when they have a position that suits you. I don't think they were blowing you off - I've interviewed many people for positions and generally you make your mind up within the first 5 minutes, so the fact they kept you there for 45 min means they were desperately trying to fit you in somewhere in the company. Tip for next interview: research the company and be ready to ask questions about it. Good luck !
If you're not comfortable suggest speaking over skype first - set up a different account that you can delete should the person prove to be a problem.
