Syria: UN human rights report built on hostile sources The Syrian Foreign Ministry has refuted a UN report on human rights violations distributed Monday at the UN General Assembly. The report “is based solely on findings provided by the media, hostile to Syria,” reads the statement published by state news agency SANA. The UN report also ignores insurgents’ crimes against the regime and civilians, the Ministry added, regretting that the UN Commission on Human Rights has “turned into a tool for nations who seek to topple the Syrian government.” Earlier, Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad slammed the report for, as he said, a lack of facts. On Monday, the Commission on Human Rights qualified the Syrian regime’s crackdown on the opposition as “a crime against humanity,” and recommended referring the Syrian dossier to the International Criminal Court. The UN estimates that over 5,400 people have died in Syria since a popular uprising against the Assad government broke out a year ago. Assad maintains he is fighting an armed insurgency sponsored from abroad.
