RE: Black Death dug up

Same as doing it in the first place, as there is growing opposition to the planned link, which will destroy a lot of our countryside, and apparently cut a Golf course in half.

RE: Black Death dug up

RE: There Are Those Who Think Stonehenge Was A Graveyard Around 3,000 B.C.

I fully understood your meaning, but it is important to know why this huge monument was built if we wish to understand life many years ago.

The original Stonehenge was erected in the Stone Age by the people of Britain including Scots as remote as the Orkneys, as the structure was a cultural meeting point for the whole of the island. The continental influence came later from the Beakers who introduced the Iron Age and buried their dead in burial mounds surrounding the monument.

RE: There Are Those Who Think Stonehenge Was A Graveyard Around 3,000 B.C.

Well I guess they wrote the instructions down in Greek when they built Stonehenge if they were unable to converse, which was started about 3500BC.

You can go to the bottom of the class too. Fancy not knowing that the British Isles had already been discovered by a Greek merchant.

Pytheas of Massilia circumnavigates Britain

Pytheas of Massilia (now Marseilles), a Greek merchant and explorer, circumnavigated the British Isles between about 330 and 320 BC and produced the first written record of the islands. He described the inhabitants as skilled wheat farmers, usually peaceable, but formidable in war when they used horse-drawn chariots. He also described the Cornish trade in tin with the Mediterranean.

RE: There Are Those Who Think Stonehenge Was A Graveyard Around 3,000 B.C.

There are so many theories on this subject but the latest link that I first posted is the most up to date.

The ditches were dug out by human hand but according to history the ruts were a left over from the Ice age and the people discovered that they were in perfect symmetry to the sun rise and sun set.

More info then I'm off.Fascinating subject though.handshake

RE: There Are Those Who Think Stonehenge Was A Graveyard Around 3,000 B.C.

Another link for you to read.

The original smaller bluestones were placed in the form of a graveyard. The larger monoliths came after. The natural formation of the ditch was a leftover from the Ice Age,and so Stonehenge the outer circle was formed in line with the Sun.

Stonehenge as you see it today is the remnants of what was originally built around the bluestones which was an original cemetary.

It's the oldest remaining structure in Europe .

RE: There Are Those Who Think Stonehenge Was A Graveyard Around 3,000 B.C.

Well I guess they are in a better condition now than they would have been if left, as you own country didn't seem to want to protect it's Heritage now did it. scold

RE: There Are Those Who Think Stonehenge Was A Graveyard Around 3,000 B.C.

I pointed this fact out in an earlier post. Nothing has been actually proved as to how Stonehenge got there. It's theorising on the possibilities, that's all.

There is a programme on British TV about this very subject tonight called "The Secrets of Stonehenge Skeletons" so will Humax it and watch later with interest.

RE: There Are Those Who Think Stonehenge Was A Graveyard Around 3,000 B.C.

Stonehenge will always remain a mystery. It's assumed that the Blue stones were transported from Wales, but no-one knows for sure ,as they could have come from the glacial period and deposited at the site.

The outer stones were quarried in Wiltshire according to theory.

You are right it is fascinating.Went to see the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza in Mexico. Unbelievable ,as were the iguanas running around.

RE: There Are Those Who Think Stonehenge Was A Graveyard Around 3,000 B.C.

It's all purely theoretical I'm afraid.

RE: There Are Those Who Think Stonehenge Was A Graveyard Around 3,000 B.C.

The mystery of Stonehenge has never been solved. To this day no-one knows how the stones got there.

RE: Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

There's one conspiracy theory that'll take some solving.
