ENGLISH GRAMMAR TEACHERS PLEASE HELP

I need your help on the following sentences used by my students in their exam held last week.

1. "I am in the pink."
This is something new to me as I have never used it nor heard of it before. I checked the Oxford dictionary and the idiom is
correct.
So if this is the correct form of usage, then what happens to the idiom we have been using all these decades -
"I am in the pink of health."? Is this incorrect and should I tell my students to stop using this idiom?

2. "We planted trees and flowers."
I feel that this sentence is incorrect because I feel that a flower is a part of a plant and therefore logically we can't plant flowers.
Is this some form of expression that is grammatically correct and acceptable?

3. "I planted some sleek trees."
I taught my students the word sleek a couple of weeks ago, namely referring to cars. But is it acceptable for trees?

Question 1

The choice of answers for this question were

A get

B got

C gets

D getting

The answer given by the teacher who set the paper and as according to the reference book she used, the answer is got. However others said that the answer is gets. Which answer is correct? If gets is the answer, some of them question why should the answer be in the simple present tense when the whole passage is in the past tense? Does the signal word every require us to use the simple present tense since it is a habitual action even though the person does not exist, has died or no longer does the activity? Please explain the grammar rule to support the answer.

Hey Guys! Thanks for all your replies. Created some insights. Seems like scammers are here to stay and frustrated people like me have to come up with forums like this. Best wishes always!sad flower

Well said! This is what I encounter too. Yea, what are people 20 or 30 years younger wanting to 'get to know me'? They are always from 'U.K.' They must be an 'engineer' and either a widower or never mariied before. They will 'call' me on my mobile. Just fascinating aren't they?

Hello everyone! I wish to know if you would support my suggestion.

I really hope CS will include the following:

1. I suggest that the date when a person creates an account with CS is indicated in his/her profile.

2. All emails of a person who is suspended from the website or leaves this website is retained by the receiver of the email so that it can be referred when necessary.

There are lots of scammers around and information such as the above would help CS members to recollect information, alert other members and also use as reference when CS is contacted. Scammers keep registering using new data but they are the same person. Members can identify such abusers of this website by seeing the similar pattern in their emails or private email information etc.

RE: WHAT DOES A DOG THINK?

Bed time guys! It is 12.23 am. in Malaysia. See you all tomorrow! Have a great day!

RE: WHAT DOES A DOG THINK?

Thank you Papi. My son does most of what you have listed. He is a shepherd. I guess they all behave the same. Wonderful creatures.

RE: passed away

Dear Steve,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences to you and your family. I truly understand that feeling of losing our loved ones. I have lost my mum, sister and godmother in the past few years. My dad passed away when I was 13! My sister was so healthy and she was there for me when I was sick but her cancer came and took over and she left within 12 months. I bought this house for her, now, I am living here till my time comes while she is probably happy in heaven.

Thank you for the advice.

Thanks alot Marie. That was sure good advice. I am still learning. I am glad I had put this on forum because I educate myself when I get feedback from many people.

death

Yes, indeed! That was one of the issues I got upset with. My grandniece loves my dog and she has a little baby brother now. I just spoke to her over the phone and she enquired about my dog. I did not want my little girl to know how nasty my dog was but I did tell her today that Lixon is a naughty boy.

death

You make sense. Thanks. I wished I had caught him in the act and of course I would have stopped him.

death

Hey! This is a good one! Thanks! That is what my neighbour said. She said, if the cat escaped from my dog, the cat would have still died probably hit by a car or something like that.

death

I guess you must have laughed because I talk to animals and I claim they understand English. Well, if animals don't understand language, for a start, how is it that they recognize people calling them by name? I feed stray cats in my backyard and I have names for them. I have cat food bought specially for them so that I do not send them away empty when I see them around. I call them by name, and they come and they respond to my call in their own way of communication. They can even "tell" me when they are full and do not need food. My dog understands so many things. He too "communicates" with me. Sometimes I feel my dog is smarter than some of my students.

death

I guess I must be extremely sensitive! Thank you for the kind and comforting words.

death

I truly understand you which is why I was upset with my dog. I was extremely sad about the people who lost that cat. That cat may have been somebody's everything. I am very sad.

death

Thank you all for your responses.

Onlyguy, you have reminded me something that I seem to have forgotten when this incident happened. Yes, you are absolutely right when you said that my son guarded his territory. He did his job. He was impressed that he did his job and he was even more impressed when I discovered the dead cat. Apparently, I gave my dog his lunch and was walking towards the gate to sun dry some almonds. The dead cat was behind my car and I did not see it. The minute I saw it, I yelled and cried at the same time. My son who was having his lunch ran to the dead cat and sniffed it and looked at me, meaning he was trying to impress me that he had done his job, looking after my premises. It was I who was super sensitive and was unhappy with his course of action. I understand it all now that you kind people make me realise the truth behind my son's actions. Thank you.

death

Steve, tell me if a cat can cause infection to the dog because I notice that my dog has some injuries on his face and ears.

death

Friends, I have uploaded my son's photo for all of you to see. Thank you for your responses.

death

My dear friends, thank you for all the responses. I was feeling miserable not being able to talk to anyone about this incident. I am grateful that I have such wonderful people out there who care for my dog, my son. Thank you. BTW, his name is Lixon Aiko.

death

Laura, yes my dog is my son. He is my joy and my one and only companion. I feel miserable for what had happened, but as you say I have to forgive him and be at peace. I know he has only me and he looks forward to my hugs and my praises. Although I have not talked to him for the past 48 hours, I shall make an attempt tomorrow. Thank you.

death

Steve, thank you for your response. I admit that I reacted badly. That is why I discussed this matter at this forum to get responses from people like you. I shall bear this in mind next time.

death

My dear friends thank you very much for your responses. Some of your responses are helping me recover from this incident. In a way I am very responsible for what had happened
1. I did not train my dog not to chase cats. Honestly, I do not know how to train a dog not to follow its instincts.
2. I was indeed harsh by not giving him his dinner.

Yesterday I yelled at him (in the presence of my neighbour) for killing the cat. I also told him that he will not have food because he killed the cat. I gave him two slaps telling him not to kill a cat. He did not fight back, (which he usually does) but when he is at fault, he just accepts the scolding. FYI, he is 7 years old. He understands English and I suppose he understood what I had said because he usually feels very embarrassed when I repeat mentioning his offence, which I did for the rest of the day yesterday and today I sat down and spoke to him instead of yelling. He too sat down and listened. Of course, all this will not change his instincts to chase after a cat or a bird or a mouse. I know that.

I skipped my dinner last night for having punished him and also due to the sadness of seeing a poor cat dead in my compound. I just couldn't sleep because I was so hungry. I could imagine how much he suffered too.

And friends, I gave him his breakfast today morning.

My dog did not eat the cat.

What puzzles me is that why the cat did not escape and also can anyone tell me how does a dog kill a cat? The cat was intact, no physical injuries except for some its fur around the compound. Both my neighbour and I were at home and we did not hear any unusual barking from my dog. My neighbour who is a Muslim who keeps away from dogs was in the defence of my dog. Although she loved the cat better and had actually played with the cat a few hours before its death, she did not blame my dog for what had happened. Instead she said that my dog must have played rough on the cat. Her explanation puzzled me too. She could come to terms with this incident but until now, I can’t. I was upstairs doing my work and all this happened in “silence”? Really puzzling!

death

Hello everyone! I saw a terrible scene today morning where my dog had killed a very beautiful cat in my compound. I fail to understand why the cat did not run, or at least hide under my car. My compound is fenced up and I feel so miserable to see a dead animal in my compound. I couldn't trace the cat owner. I buried the poor animal and while at work I was just thinking or rather picturing how much the cat had suffered before it died. Now I have punished my dog without dinner. Am I harsh to my dog?
