it really depends on situation ....It doesn't mean that if we lie or say the truth there should be consideration in every situation that arise 
I realized you have the point of considering one's feelings and @times we are not the same
.Being yourself made it a big difference
but every country does have their own rules and requirements in applying and programs that you have to comply.I did that too in my application to US E mbassy and thanked God got my working visa
the first I thought was to lie to get an excused but I realized it would just make it complicated so I accepted and told the truth even it hurts a bit
