It is a complete and utter mystery to me as well, Conrad...and i've been here all my life. The system is certainly not "democratic" in the slightest as it does not reflect the popular vote and there need to be guidelines of who can run for the office of Presidency and who cannot...there also needs to be a strict psychological evaluation done on potential candidates before they are allowed to even run. If that were the case, both Clinton AND Trump would have never been allowed to step into the race to begin with...both are nuts IMHO
I'd say if something doesn't feel right, it probably is not...don't always give the benefit of the doubt, no matter how much in your nature it is for you to do so. 
If something seems even the tiniest bit off, start questioning and checking into it...and don't be afraid to "jump ship" if you need to, as Frisky said. 
But yes, like you...much wiser this go around and I refuse to let my ex make me bitter either It's the hindsight thing though

The days of the "fast paced" CS forums...
I do miss them...we used to spend hours in here everyday chatting back and forth, jumping from one thread to another, having a great time...it was almost like one big party...what happened?
