People choose the news that most closely aligns with their beliefs, left-leaning folks choose left leaning sources etc.
Nutters choose conspiracy theory sources, conservatives choose right wing sources.

It makes people feel clever having their opinions reinforced.

It depends, you might buy concert tickets months in advance. You can't really plan on something like going sailing or fishing months in advance.
