This is why we try to collect data "blind"or conduct measurement mechanically. Still, the procedure for collecting or measuring is designed by the Operator i.e.the Experimentor. The only wortwhile justification for our efforts is Predictive Validity. It's a biggie.
I am 63,unburdened by rationality, and have not observed stages of love as a developmental process. Phase Two sounds a lot like people getting bored with each other or settling into a hum-drum existence. By the way G.bohdi,a little K-Y will relieve the inertia you speak of.
I met a stranger in a bar and after a few drinks we went to my place. Twenty years later, she finally went home. Kind of like being dropped into the middle of a continuum. You could have called this "The accelleration/decelleration of love" on a mountain railroad. Such a heady saturday in the forums.See you back at Laura's for a beer.
I have not read Berkely but the discussion in progress is not at all unfamiliar. It has origins in the last Scientific revolution and elements of many other "movements" in the recent history of both epistomology and even moral philosophy. Existentialism,as I understand it(and nobody does)is a moral relativism based on individual perceptions of the same set of events. It derived from Schopenhaur and Nietzche and was promulgated by Jaspers and Heideger before gaining a BRIEF popularity via Sartre and Kierkegaard. Some prominent thinkers like Camus and Hemingway greatly disliked being associated with the "movement",but ,for a time, everyone in the spotlight was called an Existentialist. It was the -ism of the moment, especially on campus. More important was the emergence of the Empiracle method of inquiry in the first half of the 20th century.I remember when Skinner and Estes were treated as the harbingers of a new era in the advancement of Experimental Psychology,a "new" branch of science.I was there. While the roots came from common ground Ex Psych was not following the same path as the ethical Philosophy I was hearing about in the 60s. Ambrose and I have discussed "Logical Positivism" before, rather heatedly as I recall. That because we were exposed to it from opposite ends of the spectrum. In Psychology the great influence was Wittgenstein and Carnap coming from the analysis of ordinary language and the statistical interpretation of DATA(emphasis)gleaned with an inductive approach. We began to speak more of "Phenomenology" than that which was neither logical nor positive. The emphasis is this:We have no knowledge beyond that which is derived from our observation of discrete events.AND we do not want to interpret our experience individually so much as to quantify it.To produce a paradigm with PREDICTIVE VALIDITY.Numbers have the capacity to yield just that. But we cannot TRUST our sense data. One Observer often reports differently than another. So we began to collect our data thru "blind"or cybernated experimental designs to take out the biases and experimental control was all-important. Ironically, one area of great interest was the bias inherent in individual reporting of phenomenae..... I'll stop.Hope I have added something to the thread from this perspective....
"If you have not measured it,you don't know what you,re talking about." Lord Kelvin
Sounds like Schoepenheur "The world as will and idea" Later there was the notion(cant cite sources just now) that the perception of our existence was all we had....so we should measure it. Damn it Laura,it's late...
"Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps at it's petty pace from day to day to the last syllable of recorded time, and all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusky death.Out,out brief candle. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing" Or something like that----Shakespear
What exactly does it take to get a thread pulled or a member jailed? I've never officially complained about anything but I've been banned twice for no obvious reasons. Personally,I dont believe in the MODS.They are likely mythic entities provided as Elves to absorb our wrath.Scapegoats to absolve the mean-spirited. I suspect the problems originate with other members, lacking a sense of humor or the capacity to be disagreed with.
There are so many rumors.... You may have heard them too.. That's what happens when innocent people are seen sharing a cherry-coke down at the Tastee-Freeze... Next thing you know she's pregnant and he just joined the army to stay out of jail.. Good luck in Arizona. Watch out for JackRabbits... Oh no!! I didn't mean the m**turbatory device..REAL long-eared stupid looking critters that love to die on the highway..
Bump Am I the only one doing any wondering? If romance doesn't work there's always silliness to fall back on.I've heard that some of the girls prefer the latter. Wonder where I could get one of those gold suits?.....on second thought, forget I said that.
On the Kenai river in Alaska there was an Eagle in every tree,or so it seemed. They were bold enough to steal your salmon if you turned your back. Now they are protected in the Smoky Mtns.and I see them often while fly fishing. My favorite locally is the Osprey.I sometimes get to see them dive from great heights on area lakes.Would love to see a Peregrine Hawk at work.
RE: Esse is percipi
Indeed Big_John and in the case of the flat earth the confining "box" was the Roman church you revere. No?
